2008 TARGA DAILY RESULTS - MONDAY SEPT 15
Competition was at its best during day 1 of Targa Newfoundland with
16 crews tied for first having accumulated zero penalty points.
All but two of the competition teams in Targa Newfoundland arrived at the Gander Community Centre late
this afternoon. As per Targa policy, the crews involved in the two separate incidents have been medically
cleared and at least one team hopes to return to the competition in the morning. Third place overall winner
from Targa 2007, Dyrk Bolger and Terry Milnes from Manitoba, driving their 1963 Austin Mini Cooper S, went
off the course during the first stage this morning in Placentia. The other mishap involved first time
competitors Mark Kile and Kevin Paradise of Connecticut driving a 1989 Honda CRX SI.
Ross Wood, Clerk of the course, said, "Road conditions couldn't have been better. These cars are extremely
well prepared and safe. Both the competition crews and volunteers executed safety procedures to
perfection. Over the last six years, Targa Newfoundland has an impeccable safety record and safety is of
utmost importance."
In addition, there were the normal daily mechanical troubles that see teams tightening lug nuts and replacing
alternator belts to allow them to continue on in the competition. The vast majority competing in the Targa
class travel with large teams of technical personnel who often work through the night to make sure their
team is at the starting line the next day.

2008 TARGA DAILY RESULTS - TUESDAY SEPT 16
The winds were high and the temperature was low but it did not
cool the spirits of everyone involved in Targa Newfoundland 2008.
There were eight stages on Day 2 and veteran competitor Bill Arnold from California says, "Today
separates the men from the boys and this is where your team strategy must kick in." Today's course
included the longest stage of 30+ kilometres from Point Leamington to Leading Tickles and the tricky
twisty stages through Gander making it a favourite among competitors. The difficulty of the course held
true as only two competitors held on to the zero penalty position, one in Targa class and one in Grand
Touring class.
The gruelling pace of the morning was tempered by the ladies from the various community groups in
Leading Tickles as they treated competitors to a lunch of moose stew and jigs dinner and a spread of
homemade desserts you'd only find in rural Newfoundland. Jim Kenzie, driving a 2004 Mini Cooper S
along with navigator Brian Bourbonnier, must have been dreaming about the dessert buffet as they
veered off the course on the first leg after lunch. The crew were taken to the hospital in Grand Falls -
Windsor to be checked out and we'll likely see them on the road in the morning.
Targa recognizes spirit and there are awards given out to both competition teams and service crews.
The ‘Spirit of Targa' plate is presented by Newfoundland International Motorsports to the entry that, in
the opinion of the rest of the competitors, best represents the spirit of Targa Newfoundland. The "Spirit
of Targa" is defined as the entry that has undergone the most trials and tribulations to get to or remain
in the competition.
Also, the Rick Stryjski Outstanding Service Crew Award is presented by Newfoundland International
Motorsports to the service crew that, in the opinion of the competitors, has done the most to assist
competitors (theirs or others) to remain in the competition. This plate is in memory of Richard Stryjski, a
service crewman who participated in and loved Targa Newfoundland.
Day 1 update: Dyrk Bolger and Terry Milnes from Manitoba, who went off the course yesterday in their
1963 Austin Mini Cooper S, heard that another Mini team comprising of Dave Pledger and Chris Willett
from Las Vegas and driving a 1963 Austin Mini, were having major mechanical troubles. Dyrk and Terry
have taken the engine from their car and are now in a local Gander garage busily trying to install it into
the other Austin Mini so Dave and Chris can continue tomorrow.
Also, Mark Kile and Kevin Paradise of Connecticut, who were driving a 1989 Honda CRX SI, returned to
compete today in the touring class to enjoy the camaraderie of the event.

JIM KENZIE AND BRIAN BOURBONNIER CRASH HARD
Jim Kenzie crashed hard at 160 km/hr on the 30 km stretch from the
bluff at Leading Tickles on Tuesday. Kenzie and Bourbonniere veered off the course in their #107 Mini Cooper S 04 on the first leg after lunch. The crash sent them a couple hundred metres into woods, going end-over-end a few times.
There was a lone person on the side of the road holding up a red cross which indicates a medical emergency which Brian Bourbonniere passed to the spectator after walking up from a river looking ashen saying "someone has to get Jim out of the car." The car landed so deep in the foliage that couldn't be seen from the road.
Once out of the car Jim, was fine but shocked, and Brian his co-driver the same. They were taken to hospital and later released.
Both were seen the Tuesday evening back in the arena car show at Gander and they were making light of the crash, it was obviously a big one. Jim was showing the pictures of his red Mini, totally mangled, praising its FourStar Motorsports-built roll cage.

2008 TARGA DAILY RESULTS - WEDNESDAY SEPT 17
A FIRST FOR TARGA NEWFOUNDLAND!
Second time competitors Pete Lazier and Sharon Middler of British
Columbia told organizers in 2007 that they would return to Targa Newfoundland 2008 if they could be
married at the Barbour Historic Site in Newtown. Their wish came true today as they were married by
event chaplain and fellow competitor, the "Fastor Pastor", Edison Wiltshire of Clarenville. "We didn't want
anything traditional or fancy, but Targa organizers did arrange a few extras to ensure the event was
memorable," said the bride as their Targa family and friends looked on.
The Fastor Pastor keeps an active schedule with Targa beyond the actual event dates; last year he was
flown to Ontario to perform the wedding ceremony for veteran competitor Rick McLeod. Now Rick and his
wife Ashleigh plan to have him christen their newest addition, Braydon, this Saturday in Flatrock.
Family is the backbone of Targa Newfoundland now in its' 7th year. Father and son team, Robert and Scott
Giannou, organize what has become known as the ironman of motorsport. Robert oversees the course and
coordinates the efforts of some 2200 volunteers in 72 communities. Scott typically coordinates the
sponsor activities and oversees the marketing of the event but he is also a passionate competitor. Scott
has had to trade in his racing gear for an officials badge today as his engine blew on the final stage in
Gander yesterday.
Of the 64 competition crews remaining in Targa Newfoundland, 5 of them are manufacturers competing
for the first ever Sirius Satellite Radio President's Cup. This is the first year the manufacturer entries will
have the opportunity to compete against one another and have their efforts recognized with a specific
award. Audi, Chrysler, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Subaru are all showing well in the standings - a testimony to
the fierce competition among these professional teams. The sixth manufacturer team, Mini/BMW, driven
by Jim Kenzie and Brian Bourbonniere, won't be returning to the competition. The crew are both fine,
however the car didn't fare so well. Kenzie, a renowned North American automotive journalist, is staying
and will host the VIP Tour on Friday.
Now in the third day of the event, the crews and their cars are starting to feel the pressure of increased
competition. The morning was riddled with mechanical issues but the stop in Newtown allowed service
crews to get them all back on the road. The afternoon stages in North West Brook and Gooseberry Cove
resulted in two competition incidents, the competitors fared much better than their cars.
With two days remaining in Targa Newfoundland 2008 and the Heritage Leg being one of the favorites for
the veteran competitors, the game is on.

2008 TARGA DAILY RESULTS - THURSDAY SEPT 18
EXPERIENCE DOMINATES TARGA NEWFOUNDLAND
September 18, 2008 (Marystown, NL) - It is the second last day of the week-long Targa Newfoundland
and it is not surprising to see that a large majority of the leaders are returning Targa competitors. Eight
of the top 10 have several years of Targa experience under their hoods. In fact, two of the top 10 are
previous winners.
Newfoundland's Tom Collingwood Jr. and his cousin and navigator, Chris Collingwood Jr., started the day
in 10th position overall, their best showing ever. However, a mechanical issue just before lunch will have
their service crew working through the night.
Although Andrew Comrie Picard is no stranger to Targa Newfoundland, as you've likely seen him as host
of the event's TV productions, this is his first competition effort. Driving a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer
Evolution GSR, along with navigator Jen Horsey, Andrew Comrie Picard is relying on his experience as a
top North American rally driver. He finished the day 5th overall.
Frank Sprongl and Rick Hendricksen, driving a 1983 Audi Quattro Coupe AWD, are Targa Newfoundland
rookies, however, they bring numerous North American rally victories. Sprongl is regarded as one of the
top drivers in North America in the last two decades. The team are currently 10th going into the last day
of competition.
While the Targa division sees a high percentage of returning teams, the Grand Touring division is usually
a completely new field each year. Grand Touring is about precision driving and allows competitors to
gain an understanding of the overall event. These competitors usually return to participate in the Targa
division in the future. John Vandemierden and Stu Lehmann from Ontario, driving a 2008 Lotus, have
been leading Grand Touring the last two days.
Targa Newfoundland organizer, Robert Giannou, said "Every year we see attrition in the event and 2008
is no exception. At this point seven competition crews will not complete the event and receive their
finisher medallion at the Keg on Friday."
Harold Seagle, a 4th time competitor, says, "This is an endurance event. The main goal is to finish and
anything else is a bonus."

2008 TARGA DAILY RESULTS - FRIDAY SEPT 19
TARGA NEWFOUNDLAND...7th HEAVEN
September 19, 2008 (St. John's, NL) - Make it two in a row for Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes in
their 2002 BMW 69. The team from New York finished first overall in 7th annual Targa Newfoundland, a
remarkable repeat performance from Targa 2007. They finished the competition with only 25 seconds
in penalties over the 2200 kilometre six-day event.
Hopkins, competing in his 5th Targa with his wife, says "A second overall win is nothing short of
spectacular."
In the Grand Touring division (equipped), John Vandemierden and Stu Lehmann took first place in their
2008 Lotus Exige. Newfoundlanders Alan Kearley and Greg Martin, driving a Mazda 3 Sport GT, finished
first in non-equipped Grand Touring.
The day started in Marystown with a four second spread between first and fourth place. Service teams
worked through the night to make sure their team's equipment held up throughout the final day. Bill
Arnold and Alan Ryall started the day in first driving their 1972 BMW Bavaria. Although they received
their finisher's medallions, they broke a strut tower in the fifth stage of the day and could not hold onto
their lead.
Targa Newfoundland 2008 ran one of its most competitive fields ever. Results for all classes and
categories could not be finalized until all protests have gone before event organizers to decide final
positioning. Further, all class winners are required to have their vehicles "torn down" by the event
scrutineer to insure they meet Targa class regulations.

Targa Newfoundland Course Map for 2007
A seven day race held every September
JIM KENZIE AT MINI DURHAM WITH TARGA MINI
On Tuesday June 10th., the BMW Club of Canada Trillium Chapter held their June meeting at MINI Durham in Whitby, Ontario. Social Events Director David Cook brought in Jim Kenzie, racer of the Targa Newfoundland MINI, to give us an insight into the seven day Rally.
As well as being an accomplished racer, Jim Kenzie is also a renouned journalist and colourful speaker. He gave us a lot of history, background, and behind the scenes information, in an amusing style that only Jim Kenzie can present.
For more on Jim's adventures in Newfoundland visit his Targa Page at MINI.ca.
