MOSPORT - CANADA'S HOME OF MOTORSPORTS
MOSPORT NEWS AND INFO
HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY MOSPORT
The track was built as a 2.459 mile long 28 feet wide 10 turn raceway, and widened to 40 feet in the year 2000 to accommodate the faster speeds of the ALMS.

The Launch for the year long celebration will officially start January 22 to 24, 2010 at the Canadian Motorsport Expo in Toronto, with Canadian racing legend Paul Tracy in attendance on Sunday January 24. Paul won the Formula Ford title at Mosport Park in 1985 and went on to score a Can-Am victory there in 1986, to become the youngest Series race winner at age 17.
Over the span of the last 50 years Mosport has hosted many race series and stars. Most notably Can-Am, Formula 1, Indy Cars, Trans-Am and since 1999 the American Le Mans Series.
The drivers that visited Mosport are to numerous to list but they included Stirling Moss, Gilles Villeneuve, Bruce McLaren, stock car king Richard Petty, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Nick Lauda, Rodger Ward, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Rick Mears, Gordon Johncock, Randy Pobst, Ron Fellows, Tom Kristensen, Emanuele Pirro, and Hans-Joachim Stuck.
Many more rising Stars are using the track as a starting point in their careers. These include Nigel Krikorian, Nicholas Krikorian, Nick Wittmer, David Ostella, Stefan Rzadzinski, Caitlin Johnston and Conor Daly.
The first race held at Mosport was 1961's Clubman's Race organized by the Oakville Trafalgar Light Car Club. The first international race was the Player's 200 for Sports Cars in June 1961 with an attendance of 40,000 spectators. The race was won by Stirling Moss in his 2.5 litre Coventry Climax-powered Lotus 19. The difficult turn #5 at Mosport is named Moss Corner Honouring stirling Moss.
The first Formula 1 race took place in 1967 with 58,000 fans in attendance to see Jack Brabham take the checkered flag. The same Year the first IndyCar Series races took place at Mosport. Bobby Unser won both both of the twin 100 mile races.
In 1989, the always expanding and improving facility, saw the opening of a new 1/2 mile oval named Ascot North, later renamed Mosport International Speedway.
On July 14th. 1989, the speedway held its frst major races on clay, the USAC Midgets, with Tim Champlin, Rich Vogler and Frank Weiss taking wins. After loose bolders caused a problem, the races were cut short.
The oval was quickly paved and ready for action by September 16th. 1989, when the USAC Midgets returned. As a note of interest, a young and rising star Jeff Gordon was one of the 38 registered drivers taking part that day.
Mosport International Speedway still hosts the best Saturday night stock car racing, and special events such as the Nascar Canadian Tire Series, the OSCAARS and OSS, in Canada.
The facility also has a world class 1.4 km multiple configuration Karting track, the Mosport Kart Complex.
Also at Mosport, a 2.4 km advanced driver and race driver training facility with a 1/4 mile skid pad, the Mosport Driver Development Centre.
Congratulations to Mosport on its 50th.
We will keep you posted on future events of the special year.

With a short stop and a little duct tape, Walsh was back out on the track. McNeish however, wasn't so lucky and was towed back to the infield and did not finish the race.
