GRAND-AM KONI CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS HONOURED AT BANQUET IN GREENSBORO, N.C.
Oct. 7, 2008/ Ford and Chevrolet, along with drivers Joe Foster, Scott Maxwell, Jamie Holtom and their respective teams, captured top honors Monday evening at the annual Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series Awards Dinner at the Sheraton Greensboro at Four Seasons.
Foster, Maxwell and Hyper Sport were recognized as champions in the Grand Sport (GS) division. While Maxwell - who missed the affair due to a family commitment - was the series' 2002 champion, this was the first title for Foster and Hyper Sport - a team owned jointly by Foster, Rick Skelton and Patrick Dempsey.
"This has been an incredible season for all of us," Foster said. "Everybody in the series has raised the bar so much this year. I would like to thank everyone for having the opportunity to live the dream I had since I was eight years old."
Foster and Maxwell finished fifth in the season-ending Bosch Engineering Twin Six Hour GS class race Sunday at Virginia International Raceway to win the title by six points over JBS Motorsports and drivers Bret Seafuse and James Gue, who received second-place trophies at the dinner. Taking third in the competitive GS division were Automatic Racing's Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal, the 2007 champions.
The performances of the No. 55 Hyper Sport Mustang GT - winners of two races in 2008 - helped Ford win the GS Manufacturers award. Ford's Jamie Allison accepted the honor.
Holtom, a four-time winner in 2008 Street Tuner (ST) division, won the ST driver championship in addition to helping Georgian Bay Motorsports and Chevrolet capture the team and manufacturer awards in the division. Georgian Bay owner Mike Kuznicki and Chevrolet Cobalt road Racing Project Manager Dwight Woodbridge accepted the respective awards.
Holtom was joined by Eric Curran, who co-drove with him in six of the 10 races, including three of the victories.
Adam Burrows, driver of the No. 76 Compass360 Racing/Skunk2/Sunday Management Group Acura TSX, took second in the ST driver championship, followed by Kuno Wittmer, driver of the No. 32 i-MOTO Racing Cybernation/Alpinestar Acura TSX. Peter Cunningham, who co-drove with Wittmer on seven occasions, was named the KONI Challenge Mesko Building Solutions Rookie of the Year. Mesko Senior Vice President Stephen Owen made the presentation.
Among the other awards were the SunTrust Improve Your Position Awards, presented by David Pijot, Marketing Manager and Senior Vice President of SunTrust's Sports and Entertainment Banking Division. Freedom Autosport's No. 145 Mazda MX-5 took the award in ST, while the No. 154 Hyper Sport/Jim Click Racing Ford Mustang took honors in GS.
The $10,000 Hoosier Pacesetter Program awards went to Foster and the No. 55 Hyper Sport Mustang in GS, while Karl Thompson accepted the ST award on behalf of the No. 76 Compass360 Racing Acura team.
Jim Vance, General Manager of KONI North America, presented the $10,000 KONI bonus awards. Georgian Bay won the award in ST for owner Mike Kuznicki, while Jim Seafuse and the No. 37 JBS Motorsports Ford Mustang team won the honor in GS.
The respective GS and ST champions also both received $10,000 checks as part of a new program from Grand-Am contingency sponsors.
See you in 2009.

MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK
TOOELE, UT
SEPTEMBER 21, 2008
CURRAN TAKES FIRST PLACE FOR SECOND YEAR
Eric Curran re-joined the No. 00 Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt SS team after a few conflicts with other races.
He immediately returned to his winning ways in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge series as he got back to the middle platform of the Miller Motorsports Park winner's circle podium with teammate Jamie Holtom.
It was Eric's second consecutive win in the series at the 4.486-mile track in the Utah desert outside of Salt Lake City, his 13th career win in the KONI Challenge and his 21st career professional win.
"The Cobalt SS has been a great race car at most tracks, as we can verify by our wins at Lime Rock Park and Mosport, Canada," said Curran, "but the thin air at this 5,000 feet altitude gave turbocharged cars like the Cobalt and VW an advantage that helped gain our result today."
The duo finished not quite a second ahead of a turbocharged Volkswagen.
The win boosted Chevrolet to the top of the Manufacturers' Championship points standings with one race to go on Oct. 4 at Virginia International Raceway. "Jamie's got a great career ahead of him, and I'm glad to see this win keeps him at the top of the Drivers' Championship race, too, and the Georgian Bay team leading the team trophy chase. A little something for everybody."
Holtom started the race from fourth on the grid in the Street Tuner class and was in third place by the time he pitted on Lap 17 to hand off the car to Curran. It took Curran until Lap 28 to take over second spot, then passed his good friend Matt Plumb for the lead on Lap 33.
"Matt gave me a good run and his car was handling well, but his team had pitted too early in the race. I knew he was going to have to pit for a quick couple gallons of gas, so it was a matter of when that would happen," Curran said. It happened on Lap 41 with three laps to go.
On the day prior to the KONI Challenge race, Eric joined the No. 06 Banner Racing Pontiac GXP.R team in the seven-hour Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 race. He co-drove with team owner Leighton Reese and Marc Bunting.
"I really appreciate the chance to race with Leighton, who is an old friend, and on Pontiac's factory team in the Rolex series, since I'm allied with other GM brand teams in both the SCCA World Challenge and in the Grand-Am KONI (Challenge) series," Curran said.
"The drivers in the No. 07 Banner did a great job and won the race and the championship. We never really had a chance in the No. 06 car because it had a broken suspension piece when I got in it and that cost us five laps in the pits right away," he added.
"Still, I had a good time with the team and I'd love to work with them again."

STANTON AND MILLER WIN GS AT NEW JERSEY MOTORSPORTS PARK
Craig Stanton passed Billy Johnson on the final of 72 laps of the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series Grand Sport (GS) race Sunday at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
Craig Stanton (No. 83 BGB Motorsports Porsche 997): "Our team had such great strategy and we had a great car. I'm very grateful. I just drove my heart out. We slugged it out at the end for sure. This is a great place to race. It's great to see so many fans here. I think there is going to be some great races to come."
Jon Miller (No. 83 BGB Motorsports Porsche 997): "I have to thank the BGB (Motorsports) guys for prepping an awesome car, calling a brilliant, strategic race and pulling off a perfect pit stop. They put us in position to win the race, and Craig (Stanton) made it happen. The last few laps we were all glue to the TV screens, cheering Craig on, when Billy (Johnson) got by him on the penultimate lap. We all held our breath as Craig gave chase for the final lap. When Craig came back around in the lead, we couldn't believe it. Thanks to Scott Weeden and Weeden Consultants for sponsoring myself and the BGB crew for a perfect day."

MATT PLUMB AND BOB BEEDE WIN ST AT NEW JERSEY MOTORSPORTS PARK
Matt Plumb (No. 29 Bill Fenton Motorsports Honda Civic Si): "This is a tough field and I've got double duty this weekend. I feel I had a really great car. I'm very thankful to my team and sponsors."
Bob Beede (No. 29 Bill Fenton Motorsports Honda Civic Si): "We've been waiting a long time to get this victory, and this Bill Fenton Motorsports team finally got this one. Matt Plumb did an excellent job; he knows the course and drove it well, beating a very good Chevrolet Cobalt car. We've run up front all season, and this should keep us in contention for the championship. Nice job to everyone today."

ADAM BURROWS AND TREVOR HOPWOOD WIN ST RACE
Adam Burrows (No. 76 Compass360 Racing Acura TSX): "Through the second half of the race, I was putting together a conservative race and trying to save the brakes. But when that caution came out, I knew that Pierre (Kleinubing) was going to push. There were a few places he might have been faster, but we had him in other places, and I think that made the difference. We were running some of the car's fastest laps of the day there at the end. This track is notoriously hard on brakes, and we just have to thank Cobalt for the way their pads held up today. Hats off too to the entire Compass360 Racing team for giving us a great car. We've had some ups and downs this season, but these guys never stop working hard. And Acura gave us a great car as always."
Trevor Hopwood (No. 76 Compass360 Racing Acura TSX): "It was a lot of fun qualifying on the front row, but it was even more of a thrill to put the car up front in the race, for sure. The car felt really good, and my job was just to keep the brakes under me so that Adam had something to fight with and do the job we gave him to do. He held off one of the best in the business in Pierre (Kleinubing). After the heartbreak at Iowa (Speedway) last week, this feels really good. Gotta thank Compass360 Racing, Fischer Skis, Cobalt Brakes - for the pads to go the distance - and Sunday Group Management.
"I asked Adam if he wanted to switch it up after practice yesterday, which is why we decided that I would start the car and that Adam would finish. Our luck has been a little spotty this year - either really good or really bad - and we're basically out of the championship, so we thought 'What the heck.' It worked and we're really happy with the performance."

MAXWELL AND FOSTER WIN AT BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK
Here are the winners post race thoughts:
Scott Maxwell (No. 55 Hyper Sport Ford Mustang GT): "I thought I was going to catch him in a half an hour. I didn't think it would take an hour-and-a-half. I wasn't sure if he had to pit, so I just assumed he didn't have to pit. I knew it was going to be close but he didn't make a mistake. I was running out of time. This place is so easy to make a mistake with your tires going away but he just did not make any mistakes at all. It was a great race and congratulations to the other two cars.
"I was hoping to get a top five here, but whatever the Mustangs did right here today, we're going to keep it quiet."
Joe Foster (No. 55 Hyper Sport Ford Mustang GT): "It was a hard-fought race - something to do with heat or fuel or tires or gear boxes. We were managing some engine temperature stuff. Its not normal that we would lead in the beginning but we decided to just try and race it clean. We were strong in the beginning, but I could tell the tires weren't going to last us. It felt a little like we were driving in the rain in terms of trying to find grip and keep the car pointed in the right direction. We just tried to manage the car and not do anything stupid. It turned out to be the right call."
