FORMULA 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

NEWS FROM THE WORLD CUP OF MOTORSPORTS- FORMULA 2000 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The Formula 2000 Championship Series will visit Mosport International Raceway June 12 to 14, 2009 in support of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series weekend.

The series has 2 Canadian teams, Brian Graham Racing of Innisfil Ontario, and Audette Racing of Boisbriand Quebec. This gives the series a good Canadian following.

The cars are single-seat, mid engine, open-wheel vehicles powered by 2000cc Ford engines developing approximately 150 horsepower. The chassis is a tubular space frame, flat bottom with roll hoop and energy absorbing nose box and side impact protection, manufacturers include Van Diemen, Mygale, Piper and Citation.

The races are approximately 50 miles in length. Each race weekend includes 2 full races. The cars entered are usually in numbers of 30 or more.

We will look forward to seeing the Formula 2000 Championship series up close at Mosport for a second year in a row. Last years races in support of the ALMS were out standinding.

EVENT 6 - MID_OHIO SPORTSCAR COURSE
LEXINGTON, OHIO, AUGUST 14 - 16, 2009

SERCY TAKES RACE ONE AT MID-OHIO

"The start was sure interesting," said Searcy, who has also notched wins at VIR and Lime Rock this year. "Remy (Audette) got a huge jump and got around Chris Miller. I went around the outside of Miller pretty easily. Then, I slotted in behind Remy and held station. He bobbled in the closing stages of the race and I took the lead. Minor got close and tried to get by but I shut the door."

MILLER TAKES RACE 2 AND 2009 F2000 TITLE

"The car was like it has been all year, perfect," said Miller. "JDC has just done a fantastic job and to end the season with another win is just awesome. Audette got me on the start but I passed him back a few laps later. The championship and win just feel fantastic. It's still sinking in."

EVENT 5 - SUMMIT POINT RACEWAY
CHARLES TOWN, WEST VIRGINIA, JULY 17 - 19, 2009

MATHEW INGE TAKES RACE 1 AT SUMMIT POINT

"This was an absolute team effort," said Inge in victory lane. "I also have to thank my parents for all their support, the car St. Clair Motorsports prepared was totally awesome. I managed to get by Chris (Miller) going into one and then we caught Minor. He was sliding the car all over the place and eventually spun off. From there I just made sure to keep enough of a gap to make sure Miller couldn’t catch the air off my rear wing down the straight."

TIM MINOR WINS RACE 2 AT SUMMIT POINT

"I just had a great car, we made a significant change last night and it worked," said Minor, who spun in race one on Saturday while in the lead. "We also saved our extra two tires for the race today, we didn’t even run them in qualifying this morning and that worked big time. Once I got past Audette for the lead I never looked back."

EVENT 4 - WATKINS GLEN INTERNATIONAL
WATKINS GLEN, NY, JULY 3 - 5, 2009

CHRIS MILLER WINS RACE 1 AT THE GLEN

"It was a great race, and for the championship it is even more important given where the other guys finished," said Miller in post race tech inspection. "I have to thank Miller Milling, JDC and John Church for all their support. Remy (Audette) got close to me on a few restarts but was busy trying to keep Matt (McDonough) behind him so I was able to stretch my lead."

LOMBARDI TAKES RACE 2

"That was a challenging race," explained Lombardi. "I was slow a bit on the restarts but I had a good car and once I was in the lead, McDonough was so busy trying to hold off Chris Miller that I was able to escape for a bit. Al Guibord Jr had a run on me but I wasn’t going to brake until he backed off. We went into those corners as deep as we could go."

La Rocca Sweeps Atlanta

La Rocca out front at Road Atlanta. (photo: Valet)Braselton, GA – Robert La Rocca remained perfect, with four wins in four starts in the 2012 F2000 Championship Series, sweeping the Road Atlanta weekend with a win on Saturday morning in the No. 10 HP-Tech Motorsport Van Diemen. La Rocca fought back from a challenge on the start, heading four wide into turn one, and another from Wyatt Gooden on a restart, and separated himself from the pack twice, setting fastest lap, to win over Kyle Connery and Gooden.

La Rocca to Road Atlanta Pole

La Rocca took his third pole in four races at Road Atlanta. (photo: Valet)Braselton, GA – Robert La Rocca continued the success following his third straight win of 2012 on Friday, by vaulting to pole in an early morning qualifying session for round two of the Road Atlanta F2000 Championship Series weekend, smashing the existing track record with a lap of 1:24.373.  Lining up next to the HP-Tech driver will be Wyatt Gooden, who started from pole on Friday but had to settle for second after La Rocca wrestled away the lead.

La Rocca Makes it Three for Three

La Rocca leads a tight battle for the lead. (photo: Valet)Braselton, GA – Robert La Rocca made it three wins in three starts in 2012, winning at Road Atlanta on Friday morning after trading the lead back and forth throughout the 18-lap race with rookie Wyatt Gooden, who started from pole. La Rocca eventually separated from Gooden, who went on to finish second, his best F2000 performance to date for Quantum Racing Services, with Kyle Connery following in third place. All three drivers were in Van Diemens.

Gooden Grabs Road Atlanta Pole

Wyatt Gooden took his first F2000 pole. (photo: Valet)Braselton, GA – Rookie Wyatt Gooden, who had never driven at Road Atlanta prior to today, took pole by a tenth of a second for round three of the 2012 F2000 Championship Series season, setting a lap of 1:24.907 to break the track record in the No. 6 Quantum Racing Services Van Diemen. Robert La Rocca, who leads the points coming off two wins at VIR, lines up second ahead of Fabio Orsolon, Kyle Connery and Chris Livengood.

Robert La Rocca Fast in Practice

La Rocca was quick again. (photo: Dennis Valet)Braselton, GA – Robert La Rocca continued his success from a double win at VIR, setting fastest lap over three 25-minute practice sessions on Thursday morning at Road Atlanta, ahead of qualifying and rounds three and four of the 2012 F2000 Championship Series season, driving the No. 10 HP-Tech Motorsport Van Diemen. In the third and final session of the morning, La Rocca turned in a lap of 1:24.964, well under the track record and ahead of Fabio Orsolon, Niki Coello, Wyatt Gooden and Kyle Connery.

Morcom in Van Diemen for Momentum

Morcom will drive the yellow and black Van Diemen owned by Momentum MotorsportsBraselton, GA – A last minute deal has put Australian Nathan Morcom in a Van Diemen for the Road Atlanta F2000 weekend with Momentum Motorsports. Morcom previously campaigned a Van Diemen in 2011, winning in Virginia, before switching to the RFR chassis later in the year, and contesting it last month, also in Virginia, for Primus Racing.

F2000 Road Atlanta Preview

Robert La Rocca won both races at VIR in the No. 10 Van Diemen. (photo Dennis Valet)Braselton, GA – The F2000 Championship Series heads into rounds three and four at Road Atlanta this weekend with a tight Championship battle. Robert La Rocca is coming off an opening weekend sweep, with two wins at VIR for HP-Tech, but was handed a 25 point penalty, while Niki Coello, Kevin Kopp and Fabio Orsolon are not far behind in the points. Don’t count out Kyle Connery either, who won both races in Georgia last year, Tim Minor, who finished second, and Wyatt Gooden, who ran at the front in Virginia a month ago.

Group-A Back in F2000

Group-A Van DiemenLindenhurst, NY – After a hiatus from the F2000 Championship Series, Group-A Racing is back in the formula, having last contested a full year in 2009 with a two-car campaign. Group-A has also announced prize packages for any drivers competing under its awning at F2000 races in 2012 and beyond.

Who is Kevin Kopp?

Kevin Kopp at speed in VirginiaKevin Kopp came out of VIR third in F2000 Championship Series points. The rookie, coming out of karting and Spec Miata, was relatively unknown, in the Wisko F2000 entry, but had a trouble free weekend and stayed at the front of the field. Let’s ask him some questions…

Livengood: New Year, New Car

Livengood in the RFR chassisWell, VIR was rather anticlimactic, for me anyways. That’s racing though, and while the weekend was disappointing from a results standpoint there was plenty of good things to have come of it. Most importantly, I was with good friends and family and despite race car problems had a really great time. The weather was beautiful, the track at VIR is always a pleasure, and it was just great to be back at the track with all the characters I have somehow grown to enjoy.
