LEWIS HAMILTON ON TOP

Sebastian Vettel led off the line and into Turn One. Given that he's won from pole nine times already this year it did not look good for the opposition - but then Vettel's Red Bull slid wide and onto the grass, a puncture ending his race prematurely. Lewis Hamilton, having started second for McLaren, inherited the lead and never looked back.

"I saw immediately that something had happened to his tyre, and that's why he was going sideways," said Hamilton, speaking after the race in the FIA press conference. "I was just making sure that I didn't collect him as he potentially came across the track. After that, I just saw that I had two very quick drivers behind me and I was just trying to keep the gap."Sebastian Vettel led off the line and into Turn One.

After that, I just saw that I had two very quick drivers behind me and I was just trying to keep the gap."

The quick drivers in question were, respectively, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Alonso got a good start from fifth. His Ferrari edged past Mark Webber in the early exchanges and then cleared Button on the back straight. The interesting battle was between Button, Webber and Felipe Massa. Button had predicted the DRS zones wouldn't make overtaking straightforward here, and he was proved right as Webber and Massa were bottled up behind him. Button, it transpired, was struggling with an intermittent KERS problem.

"I had to fend off Webber and also Massa which is quite interesting without KERS," he said. "In the next stint I was told what I could do to try and get KERS back, and at least we got it back, but it lasted for like two laps at a time and I had to keep resetting it. The problem is not just when you accelerate, it's when you brake. When you have KERS you have a lot of engine braking from the KERS and when you don't have it you don't have any braking performance. Every time I arrived at a corner I didn't know what I was going to get, either engine braking or not, so it was pretty tricky."

Button's other challenge was coping with Webber's decision to switch to a three-stop strategy. It gave the Australian an enormous pace advantage but meant he would be making one extra stop. Webber got ahead but was never able to pull out the gap he needed. Button claimed to be surprised by Red Bull's decision: "I don't know if they thought that I had the KERS problem for the rest of the race because when I had the KERS problem I was obviously a lot slower and he was pushing me around for 15 laps. As soon as I sorted the problem out, I would go half a second quicker. It was a strange decision to make but they also made a mistake on the first pit stop, I think, which lost them a lot of ground. I think that really hurt him and he wasn't able to really challenge after that."

Upfront it was comfortable for Hamilton as he took the victory. Alonso never got close enough to be a serious threat, but equally he never gave up the chase. "I think it was a time trial race, like an individual race, not against the time," said the Spaniard. "I was doing qualifying laps every lap, trying to close the gap, but one tenth up, one tenth down for the whole stint, as you said. I think we were dominated by people who were catching slower cars. When he [Hamilton] had some problems, I would maybe close the gap by like two seconds; when I had a problem, the gap increased by two seconds. We were dominated by how easy (it was to pass) or in which part of the track you caught a slow car."

After an eventful sequence of races, Hamilton was happy to have had everything go smoothly. "I've had some interesting victories, some better than others," he concluded. "When I was doing the lap on the way in, I was thinking that this was definitely one of my best, just in terms of my own performance, not making mistakes. I don't feel I've made a single mistake in the race and with the things that have gone, with the pressure that I've been under and with the doubt that has surrounded me, I felt just massively proud to have put that kind of performance together and to have come out on top... And it's my Mum's birthday, so it makes it even better."

YEONGAM, KOREA - OCTOBER 16, 2011

SEBASTIAN VETTEL TAKES ANOTHER WIN

Sebastian Vettel said this after the race, "Well, I think it is good to see that the whole team keeps on pushing. In terms of preparation it wasn't ideal, as I think most of us were a bit tipsy after the last race after the Sunday night. But we clearly deserved that. Now to come here and after a tough Friday and tough Saturday morning to come back in qualifying and then in the race, the car was fantastic. It was so much fun to drive. The car was getting quicker and quicker. When the safety car came I didn't really need that to be honest. Lewis came closer again and I was struggling a little bit with the tyres but then the car seemed to stabilise and come back and I was able to open a gap just before we had the second pit-stop and then to the end it was just fantastic. On the prime I could push when I had to and got a little bit of a gap as those guys were fighting. But it is fantastic. After last weekend the Drivers' Championship, this weekend the Constructors' Championship for the team is fantastic. Also I want to say, especially and in particular at this place, a lot of thanks to Renault. They have been pushing so hard. I think we showed as a team a lot of morale after last year when we had the engine failure here to come back and still win the championship last year. Faultless from the Renault side. The engine is working fantastically well. We are very competitive on those circuits with long straights like Monza or here again so all in all the package is fantastic. The guys are enjoying it and I think we do as well so thank you very much and I am very, very happy today."

2011 FORMULA 1 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX
SUZUKA, JAPAN - OCTOBER 9, 2011

SEBASTIAN VETTEL TAKES 2011 CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 3RD PLACE FINISH

Vettel drove a measured and risk free race to third position in Suzuka, the 15 points he scored at being 14 more than he needed to confirm his status as the youngest double world champion in Formula One history. With four races of the season remaining his margin of victory was some way removed from his last day heroics of 2010. In that context the German driver's very obvious delight was tinged with relief rather than surprise when he spoke in the official FIA post race press conference.

"To win the championship here is pretty special and a bit funny at the same time, because it's as confusing as the first one," he said. "All of a sudden you're supposed to... (clicks his fingers)... 'yep, that's the moment, now enjoy'. I think it will surely take a little bit of time to sink in."

FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO SANTANDER D'ITALIA 2011
MONZA, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 11, 2011

SEBASTIEN VETTEL TAKES MONZA WIN

"This circuit means a lot to me and has been very special. Obviously, I got my first win here, so when I crossed the line I remembered every single bit and the podium is unbelievable. When you stand up there you feel so blessed. It doesn't happen to many people. So many people underneath and coming all the way, even from Curva Grande, all the way. It is filled with people. It is just unbelievable. A circuit that has been tough for us to be competitive at the last two years and [we] come back this year and, really, the car was amazing. In qualifying yesterday and in the race even better. It was crucial. The start wasn't that good. Fernando [Alonso], I don't know where he was coming from but it took me a while to actually understand we were three alongside going into turn one. I kept second then after the restart I was able to pass him. He didn't give me much room there. I don't know if he still believed I was on that side. I was half-way on the grass but it was just enough. So very enjoyable and after that the car was fantastic. A great race for us and a very special win, 150 years of Italy makes it special for all the people here as well, so thanks for all the fans. Last time all the Italian people were cheering a bit more but still it is very special for me to be at that place here again," said Sebastien Vettel after the racde

JENSON BUTTON TAKES WIN IN HIS 200TH F1 START

"It is good having a couple of weeks break, as it might take me that long to get over tonight! This is the first place where I won a grand prix, back in 2006 in these sort of conditions, and it is my 200th race and I have won here again, so a great moment. For some reason I like these conditions, don’t ask me why, but it worked out again. A great call by the team to put me on the prime tyre when they did and a great call by all of us when we decided not to go to the inter. All round, amazing weekend, and I want to say a big thank you to the whole team, the mechanics, the engineers, everyone within the team that has worked so hard to produce the car that we have now. We are going into the break on a nice high, but I think every day we are on holiday we are going to be thinking about Spa already and excited about coming back and hopefully doing the same again," said a jubilant Jenson Button after the Hungary Grand Prix.

LEWIS HAMILTON WINS AT NUERBURGRING

Lewis Hamilton said post race, "I think every win is special but I think the emotion and all the energy the team put into the car and the effort they have put in... when we don't see results like this it slowly builds up, so when you finally hit the sweet-spot and get it, I think it is just ever better. It just couldn't feel any better. I think we never expected to come here this weekend and be so fast. We were hindered in the last race a little bit, but the guys did a fantastic job, really pushing very hard. Even the guys back at Brixworth HPE are pushing very hard and the engine was great. I just feel great. I think one of the best races I think I have ever done."

SEBASTIAN VETTEL WINS FOR RED BULL

Sebastian Vettel had these wordsafter the race, "Yeah, I mean maybe from the outside I don't know how much there was happening in the grand prix. But maybe from the outside. At least for myself it looked like a boring race but I tell you I enjoy it so much when it is between you and the car every single lap. Of course, I had some pressure from behind at various times as the strategy was a little bit different from Mark and Fernando. Sometimes they were pitting earlier, sometimes later. Even though I had a gap before the stop I came out of the garage and still they were quite close again. Pushing hard but judging the tyres, trying to imagine what the end of the stint could be like, trying to foresee the strategy. For some reason I enjoy this track. Last year I had a very smooth weekend and again this year from the beginning to the end. Fantastic. The team has done a phenomenal job preparing the car. Even though we come here every year and we say this might be tricky as this track is maybe not made for us 100 per cent, with no real fast corners, but we manage to put everything together and faultless this weekend. I am very happy with the result".

JENSON BUTTON WINS FOR MCLAREN

Jenson Button said after the race, "I mean I really do not know what to say. It has been a very emotional three hours or however long it has been since the start. The incident with Lewis... I couldn't see anything when he was alongside me. I couldn't see anything in my mirrors. It was one of those things and I have apologised to him. Then, it was really a fight. I got a drive through for speeding behind the safety car and I had to fight my way through about three times. Eventually, on the last lap I was chasing down Sebastien Vettal. He ran a little bit wide onto the wet part of the circuit and I was able to take the opportunity and take the win. But, for me, a fantastic race I think even if I hadn't won today I would have enjoyed this race immensely. But, yeah, amazing win and possibly my best."

SEBASTIAN VETTEL WINS TURKEY FOR RED BULL

Sebastian Vettel got his 3rd race of the 2011 season at the Turkish Grand Prix.

Here are Sebastian Vettel words after the race."It was a great result today - especially after I gave the team so much work on Friday. I hope giving a victory back goes some way to help them forget it. Saturday morning was crucial. When I walked into the garage everyone gave me the impression that nothing is wrong and there was nothing to worry about. The whole team was working so hard to get the car back together and times like these are important. The team are close to me and if they are not happy or unmotivated it reflects on me and the other way round, so after being a bit down on Friday, it picked me back up. In the race we had a very good first stint and got a gap and you can always benefit from that cushion. At the end I did two short stints, which was the right thing to do - it was seamless today. We don't know what happens next, so we have to take it race by race. There will be days when we are beaten for definite, but we need to minimise the loss - but for today, it was a great result for the team."

QUOTES FROM THE POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE:

Question to Lewis Hamilton:

Lewis, you made a gamble to keep back a fresh set of tyres. Was it the gamble that paid off for you today?

I think today the strategy we came up with going into qualifying definitely helped. I think my new option tyre seemed to last a little bit longer than the guys in front but I think it was quite a few things that came together really. The pitstops were fantastic. It was good for us. The guys are always pushing to improve and the car felt great. I was just trying to nurse my tyres whilst trying to pick up pace. It was one of the best races I have experienced where guys were out in front of me and I had to do quite a lot of overtaking. But thumbs up to the guys back at the factory and in the garage. They really put their hearts into developing the car and making the car the best it can be every weekend. It feels amazing to be able to bring home the victory for them.

Question to Lewis Hamilton:

We saw your emotion at the end of the race. We didn't quite see your emotion at the start of the race. What was going on with your car as you only just made it to the grid and how worried were you that you might not be able to start?

I don't think worried was coming into my thoughts to be honest. I was in the car nice and early to go out and then we had a problem as the car just would not start. I am still not sure exactly what went on but they had to take a lot of the bodywork off and I knew there was six minutes to go. Then there was two minutes to go but fortunately everything just came together very quickly. The guys did a great job but, of course, for me it is very important to stay as clam as possible as that reflects on all the guys in the garage. I tried to stay positive and they got the car out which was the most important.

VETTEL WINS MALAYSIA

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel grabbed his second victory of the season and extended his world championship points to 50, a 24 points lead over Jenson Button. The German took the lead at the start, and conserved his tires through three pits stops, leading Jenson Button by 3.2 seconds to the finish.

Nick Heidfeld came in 3rd for Renault.

QUOTES FROM THE POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE:

Question to Sebastian Vettel:

Sebastian, never an easy day at the office here in Malaysia but as you told the team on the radio, 'I love coming to work', and when you take home the win it is hardly surprising.

Yeah I guess so. Another great day. The start was crucial. I thought I had a really good start and then I saw Lewis lining up behind me quickly. Then I was surprised going into turn one as all of a sudden I saw something black in my mirrors. I knew it was a Lotus and then I realised it was Nick. Obviously for the first stint it was a good thing to happen as I could pull away lap by lap. I think the grand prix was different to what we saw two weeks ago especially with tyres going off. On the one side you do not want to be the first in as the shorter you get the more stops you might have to do in the end, but on the other hand if someone goes in he has the advantage on new tyres and might undercut you. I think it was quite difficult and it was tight with Lewis but I always had a couple of seconds in hand so we could control that - but still it was never easy until the last stint. Lewis had a problem, I don't know what happened to him but I realised Jenson was behind and I could comfortably control the gap so with not too many laps to go it was quite good. Very pleased as I said. I love what I do and I don't think I can be happier at this stage.

VETTEL, HAMILTON AND PETROV TAKE LEAD

QUOTES FROM THE POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE:

Question to Sebastian Vettel:

Sebastian, pole position and victory. It looked under control, was it?
Yeah, obviously, it was a good race. In the end, things calmed down a bit. Lewis didn't push as hard anymore, so we tried to control the last part of the race. But I don't think it was an easy race. The start was crucial and being on the clean side I had a very good getaway but I did not know it was enough until I saw that Lewis and Mark (Webber) were battling for position, so I was clear with that, and then the first stint more or less tried to hold the gap. But we saw how quickly you reach at some point the cliff and the tyres start to see some more degradation. Lewis caught up, we came in, I think it was the right timing, just. I could not really have done more laps. After my stop, it was crucial to get past Jenson (Button), which I could do immediately, so that was very, very important. After that, the second part of the race, I did not know what was going on behind Lewis, if he was under pressure or not. With him dropping off, in terms of the amount of pressure he put on, I could control the situation a bit better. All in all, a very good race. A lot of things to learn today and we need to definitely have another look at the race and move forwards from here.

Question to Lewis Hamilton:

Lewis, similar strategy to Sebastian. Second today. How do you assess this result given where you and the team were in testing about a month ago?
I think we can definitely take this and be very proud of ourselves. The guys did a great job coming into this weekend. Just a week or two ago we were not expecting to be anywhere near the top five, so to come sway with second... the car was reliable, it is the longest the car has ever lasted or we have been able to take it, so I think it is a great achievement from us guys. Clearly we were catching Sebastian earlier on in the race. Strategy is one that we can work on but generally we have got good pace and I am looking forward to the next race.

Question to Vitaly Petrov:

Vitaly, congratulations: your first Formula One podium in your 20th grand prix start. Tell us how you are feeling right now?
To be honest, I am very happy to be here, sitting with these guys. All weekend was pretty good for us but after the test we did not know where we were. But when we came here we had some new parts, and from free practice our car looked very strong and also qualifying was not too bad. Then we just focused on our race and today the team did everything perfectly and we must be proud about our place today.
