ONTARIO FORMULA 1200 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES -
2010

Tight and close open wheel racing at its best.

This open wheel series is entering its 47th year in 2010. It's a start up series that can be run for aproximately $5000 per year. The cars are rugged and use inexpensive Volkswagen parts. Since specs rarely change it is possible to buy a Formula 1200 car from $2000 used to $21000 brand new. The series gets factory support at every race from Vallis Motor Sport (VMS) builder of the BRD with over 25 years of Vee experience.
The races take place at Mosport, Shannonville and Calabogie, and are 20 to 30 minutes in length. Every race ends in close and tight finishes.

Last year the Formula 1200 Championship had a very event filled season. Races in Shannonville, Mosport International Raceway and Calabogie, with 23 Drivers competing in a mix of sunshine, rain, fog, wind - and one this season even hail, made for one of the best seasons ever.

Michael Iamundi dominated the 2009 season, won eleven races, and earned the 2009 season championship with a tight finish in the drivers points yet again. Andrew McMurrary was a podium regular and top 5 finisher. Andrew took some amazing onboard video footage as well, showing drivers how it is import to draft and finished the season in second place. Eric Barret was the new 2009 Vallis Cup winner for this year, scoring a hat trick in winning the three racing that weekend. Eric won six of the last nine races. Eric Barret finished the season on a high note with third overall.

The Formula 1200 Championship starts its racing season at Mosport International raceway May 8 - 9 in the BEMC 60th Annual Spring Trophy Races.

Truly an exciting racing series.

Iamundi Freight Train Rolls through Calabogie, WIM Racing Unstoppable
WIM Racing continues to sweep the Formula 1200 Championship extending there gap in the Championship Points   The Formula 1200 Championship crossed into the second half of their season with the MCO Ted Powell Memorial Races at the beautiful Calabogie Motorsports Park. Coming into this weekend, the word to describe the seasons that Michael Iamundi (#35 Montana Auto Centre Van De Car) and Phil Wang (#73 Sterling MicroSystems Caracal C) were having would be constant. Wang was constantly hauling in large amounts of points, got that photo finish win at BARC and was sitting second in the championship within striking distance of Iamundi, who has been constantly winning races this season. With 9 races to go, how the championship fight unfolds will largely be determined in the forest arena of Calabogie. Many new faces emerged for this, rounds 10-12 of the championship. After wrecking on Friday at the BARC weekend, AVR Motorsports co-owner/driver Sam Ashtiani arrived in the paddock ready to lay down a few great results and maybe go after a top-10/top-15 overall finish in the points. Also competing for the upstart AVR team this weekend was Carl Woychuk. Originally scheduled for the #24 BRD, Carl was forced into the #25 normally driven by Rookie of the Year challenger Kevin Deevey (out of his seat this weekend due to other commitments) due to a pair of blown motors on Friday. Other drivers starting their 2010 FTDA seasons at Calabogie were longtime Ottawa-based competitor Sam Mandia (#8 Exford), longtime OFFC-B competitor Dan Purdy (#36 Young Drivers of Canada/Vallis Motor Sport BRD), longtime vintage competitor (and real character) Doug Switzer (#41 TSR) and another longtime FV competitor Tony Thornton (#43 Viper) Race 1 of the weekend may have had only 16 drivers, but it was a stout and competitive field to have made the line-up. The front row had Iamundi on pole and Sergio Pasian (#76 Vallis Motor Sport BRD) alongside. Row 2 had Wang and Aaron McCauley (#31 Vallis Motor Sport BRD). Row 3 had a very impressive qualifying result from AVR co-owner/driver Shane Viccary (#27 Gladiator) alongside 6th place overall Andre Bonaldo (#92 AB Racing BRD). Row 4 had Thornton and Woychuk, with Mandia and Ashtiani qualifying on Row 5. Row 6 had Frank O’Hanlon (#87 Mysterian M2) and Switzer. Row 7 had Noel Brigdio (#46 Lynx B) qualifying ahead of his teammate Steve Bamford (#13 Mysterian M2); the final row had David Aird (#56 Vallis Motor Sport BRD) and the non-qualified Dan Purdy. However, he wouldn’t stay 16th for long… The run through the fast right hander and up the long straight towards turn 10 had the usual competitive attitude and closeness you see out of a typical Formula 1200 race. However, going through turns 10 and 11, Pasian and Wang both spun in front of the pack, creating havoc (but no retirements) amongst the remainder of the field. Also affected from the spins were McCauley and Ashtiani (he took a pretty rough ride at speed on the turn 11 grass). This affected the field by spotting Iamundi almost 20 car lengths, moved 5th-place starter Viccary up to 2nd and Purdy got all the way up to 4th. Pasian and Wang quickly got into recovery mode, and by lap 3 had moved all the way to the top-6, albeit some 10-15 seconds behind. As the lead chase group of Viccary, Bonaldo and Purdy continued to battle and being caught by Pasian and Wang, attrition rates were starting to affect the race. Ashtiani had a flat right rear tire that would later break, Thornton would spin and Aird would drive off and on. In the end, Iamundi would take another win. Viccary would take not only the team’s best ever finish, but his own as well with a 2nd place. Bonaldo would finish third, ahead of Purdy in his first race in a Vee from 16th on the grid and three drivers on recovery drives (Wang, Pasian and McCauley). AVR Motorsports co-owners had different views of the grid for Race 2. Shane Viccary would have a clear sight into the first turn with only race one winner Michael Iamundi in fromnt of him, while teammate Sam Ashtiani would start from last after suspension problems in morning practice. A mad scramble through turn 1, as faster cars starting out back tried to move up and challenge early. Any hopes of a decent recovery drive for Sam Ashtiani was dashed when he and Sam Mandia made side-to-side contact through turn 16. Up front, Iamundi would once pull away and would win his 9th race of the season. Behind him, Pasian would use traffic to separate himself from the group and finish 2nd. Wang, McCauley and Purdy would round out the top-5. Viccary’s front row starting spot was looking like a top-5 finish, but a late spin knocked him down to 6th place. If anyone felt they could be Iamundi after twenty minutes, they had to get a good start and attack early. That is exactly what Pasian and Wang attempted at the start of Race 3. It seemed from the off to have worked early on, as Iamundi spun through the quarry section and fell back to tenth place. This gave Pasian, Wang and McCauley a chance to break away from the field with Viccary trying for his second podium of the weekend. However, Iamundi was on a charge; made it to 7th by lap 3, 5th by lap 4th by Lap 6 and back to the lead by lap 8. Iamundi would take his third straight win (6th straight at Calabogie) and tenth of the season, but not before a late battle with Pasian, which did include two late lead changes. After winning 10 of the season’s 12 races so far, Michael Iamundi leaves with 324 points in the overall standings, 72 ahead of Phil Wang (252). Sergio Pasian, after a pair of 2nd-place finishes, moved into 3rd in the points with 158, two points up on Aaron McCauley, with Andre Bonaldo 5th with 121. Shave Viccary made the biggest move in the top-10 in points; up from 10th to 6th. In the rookie of the year standings, Noel Brigido used three solid top-10 finishes to move to 13th overall in points and the lead in rookie points, 7 ahead of Frank O’Hanlon; Michael Adams, Kevin Deevey, and Steve Bamford round out the top-5 for Rookies.

Close Finishes the Story as Iamundi Stretches Points Lead
After a very close racing, Michael Iamundi streches points, for the Canadian Formula 1200   The Formula 1200 Championship, part of the CASC Race Ontario Series, continued their 2010 season with the BARC-run Canada Day Grand Prix of Ontario, a rare one-day event run on July 3rd, 2010 at Mosport International Raceway. Coming into this event, Michael Iamundi (#35 Montana Auto Centre Van De Car) was emulating his run to the 2009 FTDA Championship, stringing together another impressive winning streak almost unheard in a series so focused on driving skill. After sweeping all three races at the DAC weekend at Shannonville, Iamundi had strung together 5 straight victories, took the points lead after the first race from Sergio Pasian (#76 Vallis Motorsports BRD), and would end up leaving Shannonville with a 26-point lead over Phil Wang (#73 Sterling MicroSystems Caracal C).   DAC was the complete opposite from BEMC for a pair of drivers who left in the top-5 in points. Both Michael Rogers in his Lazer #79 and Aaron McCauley in his Vallis Motorsports BRD #31, left Shannonville after three very decent results; McCauley earning three straight podiums (2 seconds and a third) to climb to 3rd place in the standings, and Rogers bounced back after a big wreck with Andre Bonaldo in race 3 to score three straight 4th-place finishes.   Eighteen cars would be on the primary entry list for the one-day event, however only sixteen cars would make the grid. Sam Ashtiani, debuting the #26 Links Blackhole from the AVR Motorsports stable, would tag the inside concrete wall on the front stretch during Friday practice and would withdraw from the event. Also withdrawing from Saturday’s competition would be the #17 V-Max of Guy Bellingham; Bellingham practiced in the morning, but would not compete due to mechanical difficulties.   The grid for Race 7 (the first race of the day) went as follows; pole went to Iamundi, followed by the #80 Lynx of Eric Barrett. Row 2 had Pasian in the #76 and Wang in the #73. Row 3 had a surprising fifth-place result for the #7 Mysterian M2 of Steve Bamford, along with the #31 of McCauley. Row 4 had young Michael Adams [the 15-year-old son of racing parents Stephen (FF) and Penni (F4)], debuting in the Vallis Motorsport #55, and Bill Mitchell running his first weekend of the season in another Vallis BRD #58. Row 5 had Shane Viccary (#27 AVR Gladiator) and Andre Bonaldo in his self-run #92 BRD alongside. Rounding out the starting order was the #36 Vallis BRD of Robert Tronchi, Kevin Deevey in the #25 AVR BRD, Kevin Kapelke in the Kapelke Motorsports Links Blackhole #4, Dave Aird in the #56 Vallis BRD, Noel Brigido in the #46 Lynx B, and Frank O’Hanlon in the #87 Mysterian M2.   Race 7 got off to a confusing start, caused when Kevin Deevey lost a rear wheel on the front stretch during the warm-up lap. Once the dust settled and the #25 car was removed for repairs, the race got under way and the battling commenced early. Early on, it was a fierce battle between Wang, Iamundi and Barrett for the first two laps. The next time round, it would be Iamundi heading the pack. Soon after, the attrition rate would start to creep up on most of the racers as the competition wore on. First, Dave Aird would spin in corner 5 on lap 3, followed by Bamford in the #7 on lap 6. Bamford’s great run (which had him as high as 3rd place) would come to an end on lap 7 with an impact into the infamous 2A tire wall. As this was going on, Wang and Iamundi would swap the lead 4 times in the first 9 laps of the contest, all while driving away from the fight for the final podium position. Part of that war could have ended with McCauley and Pasian having wheel-to-wheel contact in turn 10; both cars survived the contact, but Pasian would pit on the white flag lap with suspension problems and would ultimately be scored 11th. In the end, Iamundi would take the win over Wang, but not before needing a last-lap pass through corner 9 to seal his 6th win of 2010   Race 2 of the weekend would begin with one fewer competitor, as Steve Bamford would not start after wrecking in the first race. Early on, the story of the race was the intense 8-way fight for the lead. This fight would general 3 different leaders and 5 lead changes in the first 6 laps. A great mid-pack race for Viccary would end on Lap 6 with broken suspension, stranding him at corner 4. A clean, uneventful yet action-packed race; Iamundi would take his 7th straight win over what ended up being a 4-way fight for second between Wang, Pasian, McCauley and Mitchell. Finishers to note from this race outside the top-5 was the 6th place by Michael Adams - his second straight top-10 finish - and Kevin Deevey, recovering from his lost wheel and stop & go penalty to finish 8th.   Race 3 would be much of the same; as many as 9 drivers started off fighting for the lead. By the halfway point, a four-car breakaway between Wang, Pasian, Iamundi and McCauley broke away and were caught again. On Lap 7, both McCauley and Barrett would spin and continue on; however, Barrett would suffer a flat left rear and would fall to a 14th place finish. For a third straight race, the fight would come down to Iamundi and Wang. Iamundi tried for a second time to execute a last-lap, last-corner pass on Wang for win #8. However, instead of clearing him and off to victory, it was side-by-side action through the short shute, around White’s Corner and down the front straight. Wang just managed to outdrag Iamundi to the line, winning one of the closest F1200 races in recent memory and far and away the closest finish in any class of Race Ontario this season (.017 seconds). Behind them, Pasian and Adams fought intently for 3rd place, with Pasian securing his third podium of the season. At the halfway point of the season, Michael Iamundi leads a two-horse way in the points with 234 pts, 32 up on Phil Wang. Rounding out the top-5 in the standings include Aaron McCauley (117 pts), Segio Pasian (100) and Eric Barrett (92). In the Rookie of the Year race, Michael Adams - in his first race of the season - jumped straight to the lead with 34 pts, 1 up on Kevin Deevey. Frank O’Hanlon (25), Noel Brigido (23) and Steve Bamford (13) round out the Top-5 in rookie competition. Next race, the MCO Ted Powell Memorial Race at beautiful Calabogie Motorsports Park July 24/25.

Formula 1200 will be back in action in three weeks with a one day event at Mosport.
The Formula 1200 series will have its first one day event for Mosport Canada Day Grand Prix. The Canadian Formula 1200 series will be back in action in three weekend time at Mosport. The Canada Day Grand Prix of Ontario will host a new schedule for the weekend. Instead of having the race weekend over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Grand Prix will only be held on Friday and Saturday. Not only is the Canadian Formula 1200 series affected with the change but so is the Canadian GT Challenge, Race Ontario GT Sprints, and Race Ontario Formula Libre. “I personally don’t like the one day event. Some of us drivers are coming in from a good three or four hours away. We want a good fun weekend not a day” commented Kyle Kosir on the schedule change. The main thing the drivers and teams will have to be very careful about is the reliability and no damage through-out the day. Any Damage could make a driver go home and that could be the same with an engine. There will only be forty minutes in between racing sessions. Phil Wang from AVR said “I think that it will really take a number on our cars and engines. Having qualifying, and three races will keep us busy, it also has the risk of not having the time to fix major damages if they happen on our cars having races so close together” The Next race will be the Canada Day Grand Prix at Mosport, June 2nd-4th.
