ONTARIO FORMULA 1200 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - 2009Tight and close open wheel racing at its best.
ONTARIO FORMULA 1200 CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
This open wheel series is entering its 46th year in 2009. It's a start up series that can be run for aproximately $5000 per year. The cars are rugged and use inexpensive Volkswagen parts. Since specs rarely change it is possible to buy a Formula 1200 car from $2000 used to $21000 brand new. The series gets factory support at every race from Vallis Motor Sport (VMS) builder of the BRD with over 25 years of Vee experience. The races take place at Mosport, Shannonville and Calabogie, and are 20 to 30 minutes in length. Every race ends in close and tight finishes.

EVENT 3 - TED POWELL MEMORIAL WEEKEND CALABOGIE MOTORSPORTS PARK JULY 25 -26, 2009
POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE
Q: Andrew welcome back on making the podium again for the weekend in Calabogie. After a Tough weekend during the BARC GP just missing out the podium spot, how does it feel to get second in the last race of the weekend?
Andrew McMurray: Yeah, this one felt pretty good and things just went our way unlike BARC GP. It's a bit of a shame not be be closer to Michael at the end for 1st, but overall I think it was a pretty good performance all things considered. The guys did a great job making sure I had the car to put it up there.
Q:Did missing the Friday practice sessions make it alot harder for you to bring the car home second? Or did doing the half last season make it a little bit easier to learn?
Andrew McMurray: Actually it was doubly hard as we made the decision to scrub in some old rain tires just in case it rained later in the weekend which turned out to be unnecessary. The west loop is more challenging than the old east loop and it showed in my overall performance. Everyone that tested Friday, out qualified us on Saturday.
Q:How does it feel to race against a 18 car grid compared to last years 12. How much more pressure is that on your part to try and win the championship?
Andrew McMurray: Full grids are great and the racing is even closer and I'm sure its great for the spectators. I've found that if you make a mistake it really sets you back this year. I don't think it adds more pressure as the goal is to always go out and be at the front regardless of how many are out there.
Q:Phil Congraduation on Comming 3rd Last race and being on the Podium again. Compared to last season how much has the car improved overall?
Phil Wang: Going back to last season and comparing the car to now, we are getting alot more consistancy in car set-up and how the car feels lap after lap. Achieving more constance in car handling, we can tune the car more accurately resulting in better handling through corners and more speed on the staright segments of the track.
Q:Looks like you had a problem 2nd race as there was an avoidence going into corner 5. Can you speak us goin into the turn and what happend on your part?
Phil Wang: Approaching turn five in race number 2, I knew things were going to get a little heated as we entered the corner. To be honest, I believe the actions that were taken going into corner five were thought too early in the race. Myself, aswell as 2 other cars entered the corner three wide not having enough room for all of us to make a fast entry and exit through the corner. This resulted in myself and one other compeditor being sent to the back ot the pack for the remainder of the race. I guess there seems to be a little impatience for positions at the begining of the race, but when drivers get to confident theres always a price to pay.
Q:Now that you have been on the podium twice now, and with your team mate Michael Iamundi, how does that feel?
Phil Wang: Starting to join the rest of the team on the podium now, I feel really good. I believe it's benefitial for both of us, standing on two of the three podium positions. Now we can possibly look into team sponsorships, as well as furthur racing opportunities could arise. Anything can happen and like I stated, it feels good and benifitial for both of us.

EVENT 1 - CRDA SHANNONVILLE SHOOTOUT SHANNONVILLE MOTORSPORT PARK MAY 30- 31, 2009
TWO OUT OF THREE FOR IAMUNDI IN SHANNONVILLE
The Canadian Formula 1200 championship opened up at Shannonville this past weekend and if the first rounds of the season are anything to go by, this year's championship promises to make many twists and turns. From the opening of practice right down to the final laps of the day no one could tell what would happen next. One thing that is clear is the field is as deep as ever and the racing as tight as you will see anywhere.
Saturday's morning practice proved to be a challenge with multiple river crossings on a dry track in key areas making it difficult for most drivers to gain any consistency. Setting the grid for the Saturday race saw experienced veterans like Michael Iamundi, Andrew McMurray, Mike Rogers and Eric Barrett at the top of the timesheets.
Under ideal conditions, the opening race for the championship saw Iamundi take control straight from the green flag all the way to the chequered taking his first win of the season in defence of his 2008 title. McMurray battled with Rogers early on, but after an off by Rogers, McMurray was able to solidify P2 place behind Iamundi. Rogers once back on charged hard in the closing laps regaining a hard fought P3. Keenan Harris of BGR-TLM-Team Grote Racing was the top finishing rookie with a solid P5 finish in his first ever open wheel race, staying very close to the experienced veterans.
With R1's finishing order setting the grid for R2 Sunday morning, expectations were that a similar performance to the Saturday race would unfold again. With an early start time and colder conditions the grid sped off for the green flag. A very tight start meant heading into turn 2 cars were three wide at the start. Iamundi came out ahead followed closely by McMurray and Rogers, followed closely by Harris, Rob Tronchi, Harris, Phil Wang and Eric Barrett. Halfway through the race saw mechanicals claim McMurray and Iamundi, leaving Rogers, Tronchi, Harris, and Wang battling for the win. Each took their turn passing each other for the remaining laps where eventually Wang dropped out with a mechanical problem. At the wire it was Rogers picking up his first win in the series followed by Tronchi (personal best P2) and the rookie Harris picking up his 1st podium in P3. Taylor Near brought home the BGR-TLM team Grote Racing F1200 for P4, followed by Eric Barrett to round out the top 5. Also of note were clean drives by other rookies Sergio Passian and Scott Laporte.
The trophy race on Sunday afternoon provided even more intrigue as minutes to the grid the rains opened and wet the track. Taking the green flag under a drying track the conditions were extremely difficult. From start to finish the drivers would endure such changing conditions that would see their lap times improve by over 20 seconds over the 20 minute sprint race. In a race that saw 5 lead changes, Rookie Harris lead most of the way as McMurray and Iamundi made their way through the field after starting at the back due to their previous DNF's. Making a last lap pass for the win Iamundi passed both Harris and McMurray, with McMurray also slipping by Harris, in the closing stages to take the trophy race by .181 seconds over McMurray in P2 and Harris in P3. Rogers capped off a great weekend by finishing P4 with Tronchi bagging more points finishing on his tail pipe for P5. Phil Wang drove a nice race after replacing his engine in the morning. Rookies Laporte, Passian, Near, and Aaron McCauley rounded out the top 10 in tough conditions.
