2009 FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

SEBASTIAN VETTEL WINS MAIDEN ABU DHABI RACE
Sebastian Vettel ran a riot in Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening, cruising to the victory from Red Bull team mate Mark Webber, who had to fend off a charging Jenson Button in the closing laps.

Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton retired early on with suspected brake problems on his McLaren, but had never looked likely to contain Vettel, who secured second in the driver standings.

RACE 15 - JAPAN, OCTOBER 4, 2009
2009 FORMULA 1 FUJI TELEVISION JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

SEBASTIAN VETTEL STAYS IN TITLE RACE
Sebastian Vettel came to Suzuka knowing he had to go for broke if he was to keep his title hopes alive. He delivered in style, staying cool in a hectic qualifying to put his Red Bull on pole, and then leading from lights to flag for ten points.

Sebastian Vettel's post race comments:
"What a race. Obviously yesterday with pole position and I think strategy wise we were the favourites but first of all you have to do the start. We were pretty confident and had good starts in the past. Not that that was always the case at the beginning of the season, but we were confident of defending the position. But it was closer than I thought it was going to be. Going into turn one all of a sudden I saw a silver arrow on the left hand side and obviously I had the inside and it was my advantage but it was closer than I thought it would be. After that it was head down and try to push every single lap. The car was fantastic. I was able to pull a gap quite quickly, a big one, enough. Obviously with the strategy we were two laps longer than Lewis and a lap longer than Jarno in the first stint, so it all worked out. Until the end I was pretty much in control. I fitted soft tyres for the last stint and second and wanted to have a little bit of fun. I did one very quick lap, I think 32.5, then my engineer came on the radio and said 'ok, be aware of your tyres. There might be a safety car or something'. Two laps later there was the safety car. Obviously, it is not what you are hoping for when you are in the lead by roughly 10 seconds. But, nevertheless, I was still taking care of my tyres and at the restart I was able to use it. I had a bit of a cushion with Romain (Grosjean) behind me. A very good restart and then three to four phenomenal laps again to build a gap that was safe enough to win the race in the end, so fantastic. As you said, finally we made it. I was screaming on the radio. I think in the last couple of races it was a little bit up and down. Sometimes we had the pace, sometimes we didn't and yeah, finally we made it, so it is good to be back in first position also on Sunday."

RACE 8 - SILVERSTONE, JUNE 21, 2009
2009 FORMULA 1 SANTANDER BRITISH GRAND PRIX

VETTEL TAKES BRITISH GRAND PRIX
Here are Vettel's post race comments:
"You know, it is never easy. It is a long, long race and I think particularly at this fantastic circuit everyone of us is enjoying it a lot. Fast corners. it is a dream, really, so you have to stay focused and keep your eyes open all the time. It is not easy. But as you say the start was very important, then in the first stint I tried to push as hard as I could to pull away and make a gap which I knew would be crucial as then I would benefit basically the whole race from it which worked perfectly well. I had a fantastic car. I mean it was unbelievable. I was able to push, push, push more and more and more and the tyres were very consistent, so very good tyres as well. I am very pleased."

Jenson Button has taken his fifth win of the season after an imperious performance in Monte Carlo, winning the Monaco Grand Prix from Brawn team mate Rubens Barrichello by 7.6 seconds.

TOP 3 AFTER RACE DRIVER QUOTES:

Sebastian Vettel (1st):
"It's unbelievable - I'm so, so happy. Ten laps from the end I tried to control the gap between me and the car behind and adapt my pace. I was trying to have everything under control, but it was difficult. At some points I was trying to bring the car home, but that meant I lost focus, so then I just tried to take it corner by corner, not looking too far ahead. On the last two laps I backed off a bit, as I didn't want to risk aquaplaning on the water at the side of the track. And then... well it's just fantastic. Winning my second race, one with Toro Rosso and one with Red Bull, makes me extremely happy and I hope we can continue working in this direction! I'm extremely proud and happy. I'm so happy to have won the race, it was an enormous and great job by the whole of Red Bull. I want to say a massive thank you to them all, everyone has worked so hard, so thanks to the team and also to Red Bull. Greetings to Austria!"

Mark Webber (2nd):
"It's such an incredible day for the team - you have no idea what the guys went through last night. We were absolutely sh*tting ourselves that the cars wouldn't finish the race because every time we ran yesterday, they stopped. So, it's incredible to get the cars home and to get maximum points. This comes after the near misses in Australia for Sebastian and for myself in Malaysia. It's a great day for the team in Milton Keynes, well done and thank you to them, and also to everyone in Austria. It was a challenging race at times! It was hard to follow the cars in the beginning due to the spray, but then further into the race, it started to settle a bit. After the second safety car stint, I had a good scrap with Jenson. On my official lap at the front, I couldn't believe how clear it was - I thought 'Oh my God, it's beautiful!' I then pushed like hell to make up as much time as possible - it was fantastic. When Jenson (Button) re-passed me, I was very keen to try win the race, so I passed him around Turn seven as I knew he wouldn't know I would be there, it was one of the best moves of my career. I'm happy today!"

Jenson Button (3rd):
"A very difficult race today and I am so pleased that we got both cars to the end of 56 laps and scored as many points as possible. The conditions were pretty crazy with rivers of water all over the circuit which changed every time you encountered them. The last turn particularly was like a lake and you just couldn't brake for the corner. I struggled with the car aquaplaning and the tyres shuddering as we couldn't get the temperatures high enough to make them work properly. Mark Webber and I had a good fight for a few laps but I just couldn't stay with him. However to finish the race today is an achievement in itself and to be on the podium is fantastic. We couldn't have beaten the Red Bulls and congratulations to Sebastian and Mark on a great result."

RACE 2 - KUALA LUMPOR MALAYSIA, APRIL 5, 2009
2009 FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX

TOP 3 AFTER RACE DRIVER QUOTES:

Brawn GP
Jenson Button (1st):
"What a crazy race! It was really exciting out there and I'm delighted that we came out on top today. I didn't have the best of starts and was surprised at the lack of grip on my side of the grid. I went in deep at turn one and got a big snap of oversteer which dropped me to fourth but I was able to get past Alonso at the end of lap one and overtake Trulli and Rosberg at the first pit stops. I was happy with the car and our pace was good but the weather really threw the race wide open. Choosing the tyres was difficult but we made the right calls at the right time, particularly when it started raining so hard and so quickly. I have to say a massive thank you to my engineer Andrew Shovlin who was on the podium with me today and the whole team for their work on the strategy and in the pits. Last weekend we said that we had a fairytale start to the season and I am so proud that has continued here."

BMW Sauber
Nick Heidfeld (2nd):
"I'm obviously very happy to be second after starting from tenth. It was a really extreme and challenging race today. I had a good start but also quite a heavy car, which meant racing was not easy for me. When it was obvious it would rain soon I pitted seven laps earlier than planned, and we decided to go on full rain tyres. They wore down quickly because the heavy rain didn't come. The team kept telling me 'stay out, heavy rain expected', but the tyres felt almost like slicks. For those laps intermediates would have been much quicker, but who could know that. When it finally poured down it was the right decision to stop the race. It was absolutely impossible to drive. I spun behind the safety car, not only because of aquaplaning with the tyres but also with the underfloor. I'm happy for our team that we can now bring home at least one proper result from the first two races of the season."

Toyota
Timo Glock (3rd):
"It is fantastic to be back on the podium and I am really happy for the whole team. It was a really tricky race. I started third and was eighth at the end of the first lap. I struggled a bit behind the guys in front of me in dry conditions but I made the right call on the intermediate tyres; I said let's just take the risk and go for it. It was a long time before the rain really came down and I was not sure what everyone else was doing. They were struggling on the wets but I was really quick and I made up a lot of positions. When the rain came down I had to go to heavy wets because my tyres were destroyed. I was going well on them and it was unlucky that they declared the results based on the order at the penultimate lap because I could have had second. When the red flags came out I was second but I'm still happy with the result."

RACE 1 - MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA, MARCH 29, 2009
2009 FORMULA 1 ING AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

JENSON BUTTON WINS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

JENSON BUTTON Jenson Button's great victory marked the 200th F1 win for a British driver.

"It's not just for me but for the whole team," he said, "a fairy tale ending really to the first race of our career together and I hope we can continue this way. We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be. Bring on Malaysia!"

FROM POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE
Question:
"Jenson, mayhem in front of you perhaps and certainly the mayhem behind you showed how much things could have gone wrong for you today. But from where we sat it looked like a beautiful day at the races."

Jenson Button:
"I think it always looks easier than it is. The first few laps of the race were great for me and I could settle into a pace, but then when the safety car came out I struggled massively to get heat into the tyres. The car was hitting the ground and just before the safety car pulled in I flat-spotted the tyre pretty severely. I was struggling quite a bit with vibration and with the poor light as well. Being in the front it should be easy, but it was not easy at all. I tell you that. But an amazing day. Some people might say it is a pity it finished under the safety car, but I don't care. I won the race today and that is all I care about. I have got to say a massive thank you to everyone for this. It has been a traumatic few months for all of us, as I have said already, but I can't put it out there how tough it has been, so I have got to say thank you to the whole team. But also to my family for being so strong as it has been difficult."

Jan. 23, 2009/ With gusty winds reaching 50 km/h, the scheduled test programme had to be changed and the main focus of the morning's work switched from set-up to reliability. Nick Heidfeld completed several long runs to put more mileage on the new F1.09. After the weather improved slightly in the afternoon, Heidfeld was at last able to work on the mechanical set-up.

"Finally I could drive the F1.09 for the very first time," Heidfeld said after completing 92 laps. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we are making progress with each kilometre and the reliability is already there. Overall the F1.09 handles quite differently to last year's car. Fortunately I managed to work on the set-up in the afternoon. The most important result after my first day of testing is that the car reacts as intended to set-up changes."

Next weekend's Italian Grand Prix will see the return of F1 Rocks™ to the Formula One scene with a headline performance from international rock sensations The Stereophonics. The Welsh band will be supported by emerging singing talent Ben Montague at the concert, which will be held on Saturday night. “F1 Rocks™ is undoubtedly the most exciting event platform and could only be possible with the global spectacular that is Formula One,” said Rob Montague, chairman of Enterprise Entertainment, the organiser of F1 Rocks. “The Stereophonics headlining our show is very exciting. Milan's Formula One heritage and status as a fashion and style capital makes it a perfect place for F1 Rocks™.”

Peter Sauber Q&A: Team funding well set for 2011
BMW Sauber's 2010 campaign got off to a slow start, but with Kamui Kobayashi once again finishing in the points in Belgium, the team's renaissance shows no sign of flagging. To add to the optimism at Hinwil, team principal Peter Sauber is certain that after some tough financial times a healthy level of funding for 2011 is now secure. As to where that funding will come from, Sauber is tight-lippedÂ…

Colin Kolles Q&A: Yamamoto set to retain HRT seat
After only launching their car in the week before the season opener in Bahrain, it was never going to be an easy debut year for new team HRT. But with the Spanish squad continually improving, team principal Colin Kolles is satisfied with the progress they have made so far. Kolles also seems pleased with driver Sakon Yamamoto, who initially filled in for Bruno Senna at June's British Grand Prix. Yamamoto has since replaced Karun Chandhok at three races, and it appears Kolles sees no reason to make any more changes in the near futureÂ…

Jenson Button Q&A: Battling on after Spa's missed opportunity
Last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix was a bittersweet affair for McLaren's Jenson Button. Sweet because the MP4-25 was back in fine form for most of the weekend, but crushingly bitter because Button's own hopes of a second-placed finish ended after Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel collided with him following a misjudged overtaking manoeuvre. Forced to watch team mate Lewis Hamilton clinch an outstanding victory and the standings lead as his own title hopes diminished didn't help the Briton's mood either. In an interview with his official website, Button reviews the Spa race and pledges to come back stronger at MonzaÂ…

Pirelli ahead of schedule after French test
Pirelli's preparations to return to Formula One racing in 2011 as the sport's sole tyre supplier continued apace this week, thanks to a successful test at France's Paul Ricard circuit. The firm's official test driver Nick Heidfeld was again on track following his debut outing for the tyre manufacturer in Italy at Mugello last month. Heidfeld spent the two-day test behind the wheel of a Toyota TF109, which was fitted with Pirelli's latest Formula One tyres. The German continued the development programme, working on both constructions and compounds. With the performance, consistency and reliability of the new rubber fully matching expectations, Pirelli were well-satisfied.

The Secret Life of Jarno Trulli
He's Italian but he's never driven for Ferrari; his first - and only - F1 victory came at Monaco, 2004; he has raised almost 670,000 Euros for Abruzzo since a devastating earthquake hit the region in April 2009; and he owns a vineyard. These are some of the things you probably know about Jarno Trulli. Now find out a few you don't, in the latest installment of our Secret Life seriesÂ…

Lewis Hamilton Q&A: I'm targeting victory in Monza too
Although he almost lost it all after momentarily going off track in the rain, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton eventually cruised to a well-deserved victory in Belgium on Sunday. Added to his 2008 Silverstone and Monte Carlo triumphs, Hamilton has almost a complete set of wins at the calendar's 'classic' venues. Next on the British driver's agenda is Monza. And with the MP4-25 expected to be equally strong at next weekend's Italian Grand Prix, he may not have long to wait, as he explained in an interview with his official websiteÂ…

Alonso: Ferrari's fortunes must improve at Monza
He arrived at Ferrari amid much fanfare, but Fernando Alonso has endured more downs than ups during a fraught 2010 season. However, as the dust settles on a particularly tough Belgian Grand Prix, Alonso is determined to stay positive ahead of the Italian team's home event at Monza next weekend - a race he says could prove critical to his dwindling title hopes. After qualifying down in 10th, the Spaniard's Spa-Francorchamps event was further hampered by first-lap contact with the Williams of Rubens Barrichello and then an early tyre choice mistake. When the rain eventually returned, he crashed out of the race on Lap 38.

Under the extended partnership, Petronas will continue to hold the title sponsorship rights as well as extensive advertising, branding and promotional benefits for the event until 2015. The partnership will provide Petronas the opportunity to continue leveraging on Formula One's massive global appeal to build and support its international business expansion efforts as well as position Malaysia as a major sporting and tourism destination.

Kubica thrilled to be fighting at the front for Renault
Renault's Robert Kubica is in a buoyant mood after clinching his third podium of the year at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix. Although he could have finished in second if he hadn't made a mistake during his final pit stop, Kubica left Spa-Francorchamps feeling pleased with his third-place finish and the performance of his R30, which was running with an F-duct system for the first time. “It was a really incredible race, but also a difficult race because of the changeable conditions and it was very easy to make mistakes,” he said in his blog on Renault's official website. “I didn't make any big mistakes on the track, but unfortunately I made one in the pit lane, which cost me second place.
