The Great Arc, last year named 5th in the Telegraph's "Top 10 Rallies Around The World", is now open for Entries. Entries are limited to 15 places. What an event the Great Arc of India has become. One month across rural India from KanyaKumari to Mussoorie tracking the route of Everest & Lampton, and off course let’s not forget the guys in their classics in 2009. The two highlights of the rally are the great diversity of Indian drives and the rather superb and glorious camp sites erected in wonderful locations across the countryside. I love driving the astonishing variety of Indian roads that criss cross the great changing Indian landscape. For me the great drives of India are the tea plantations of the Cardamom Hills Munnar to Theckedy; outstanding drives up, across and through the Palani Hills. I think the greatest of all Indian drives is Elephant Valley to Palani; or how about the 41 hairpins bends of Ooty; the big open arid expansive road to Hampi; the savannah drives around Kaddan Dam; into Pashmair hills; Sagar to Ochha; rural Gwalior route; Dausa to Alwar including Sariska; and then one of my personal favourites’ - Kesroli’s loop (you can see the film of this on Roarr.tv). And then the camping! Four great locations from coconut groves below the Palani Hills; on the river bank at Hampi; in the forests of Kaddam Dam; and high in the hills of Pashmari. This is George Everest and William Lampton crossing India as they would have camped during the Great Arc Survey of the 1820’s. Quite special, luxurious camping, the best travelling campsite in the world! Then the charming hotels, chosen because they are characterful, small and can be quite bizarre. Most are known to me from my travels in India and now form part of the Great Arc route.

Each year on the third weekend in September, a classic cars race takes place in the French town of Angouleme on a street circuit unchanged in layout since it first hosted an event in 1939, the high spot of the program is a race devoted to Grand Prix Bugatti. Situated some 70 miles to the north of Bordeaux, Angouleme is located in the heart of Charente district with an attractive town center and its cathedral occupying the high point in front of which lies the start line for the racing. The meeting takes the form of an entire week-end festival beginning with a Concours d'Elegance under floodlights in a natural amphitheatre alongside the rampart walls on the Friday evening. Saturday commences with a Rallye Touristique Internationnal ; late afternoon sees a Concours d'Etat on the lawns around the Hôtel de Ville in the center of town before adjourning to a buffet supper where the winner of the Concours d'Etat is awarded with his or her height in bottles of Cognac. Sunday morning open with practice on the circuit for the afternoon's racing, and for new entrants it is the only opportunity to drive on the closed streets before being let loose in a race.

The David Howland Collection of Vintage Vehicles includes three true ‘barn-finds’ - a 1929 Morgan Aero ‘Special’, a 1935 BSA Scout and a 1948 Field Marshall tractor - plus a fine, restored 1913 Th. Schneider 15/20hp four-seat open tourer. And, taking the history of personal transport back yet further, to the days when real, not mechanical, horsepower was required, the collection also features a number of horse-drawn carriages, most notably an elegant 19th century barouche.
