Fiskens announce two more special cars for Chelsea Auto Legends
Fiskens have announced two more pedigreed competition cars to be displayed at the inaugural Chelsea Auto Legends show this Sunday at the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

London’s foremost historic automobile specialists, whose showrooms are based in Kensington, have already revealed an impressive list of special cars to be displayed, including the Tommy ‘Scrap’ Thistlethwayte Bentley 3 litre that appeared at the 1926 Le Mans 24 Hours and a 1961 Ferrari 250 Short Wheel Base, which also took part in the legendary event, and have now added two more with a fine history of competition. Ford GT40

The first is a Ford GT40, chassis XGT-2, which is the cover star of this month’s Classic & Sports Car magazine and which Fiskens will display on behalf of its owner. The car is one of eight entered by the factory team in the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours where the Blue Oval scored a 1-2-3 finish, beating Ferrari for the first time. XGT-2 actually led much of the race in the hands of the legendary Graham Hill and Brian Muir and, after a second appearance at La Sarthe in 1969, returned to action in Europe for the first time this summer when it was demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by Gregor Fisken, Stuart Graham – a TT winner on both two wheels and four – and respected journalist Mick Walsh.

1958 Ferrari 250 Testa RossaThe second is a 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, examples of which dominated sportscar racing during the late 1950s and early 1960s, winning at Le Mans in 1958, ’59 and ’60. Chassis 0752 TR was one of the very last batches of customer cars produced at Maranello and was shipped directly to the United States where it won its class in the Elkhart Lake June Nationals, finishing third overall in the process.

“They’re both stunning examples of two very important sports cars and will fit perfectly with the Le Mans theme at the inaugural Chelsea Auto Legends show,” explained Fiskens’ James Mitchell. “Both will appear on our stand with the kind permission of their current owners who are very keen to support the Chelsea Pensioners and this landmark event.”

Fiskens to display at Chelsea Auto Legends
London’s foremost historic automobile specialist Fiskens will display a selection of stunning cars at the inaugural Chelsea Auto Legends at the Royal Hospital Chelsea on Sunday 5 September.

The first edition of the brand new event will celebrate the spirit of Le Mans by gathering a number of period cars and drivers at the iconic West London venue. With names like Sir Stirling Moss OBE and Derek Bell MBE already confirmed to appear, Fiskens will be wowing the crowds with a fine selection of automobiles on its stand.

One of two very special cars among Fiskens’ display to have raced at Le Mans will be the Tommy ‘Scrap’ Thistlethwayte Bentley 3 litre that competed at the 1926 24 Hours, only the fourth running of the legendary race. Being the only Supersports, short chassis example to have competed at Le Mans, ‘Number Nine’ is regarded as one of the most important Bentleys still in existence, especially having been a factory supplied, private entry that was piloted by Thistlethwayte and famous Bentley engineer Captain Clive Gallop.

The other is a 1961 Ferrari 250 Short Wheel Base that competed in that year’s Le Mans 24 Hours at the hands of famous British privateer Graham Whitehead and former Formula One driver Henry Taylor. The car is one of the very rare aluminium bodied examples of the seminal 250 Short Wheel Base and its competition career continued from La Sarthe to famed circuits such as Goodwood, Spa-Francorchamps and Montlhery as well as the Rouen and Angola Grands Prix.

Fiskens, whose showrooms are based just around the corner from Royal Hospital Chelsea in Kensington, will also display cars from some of the world’s most celebrated manufacturers, including a Porsche 910, Aston Martin DB4 GT, Allard J2X and Ferrari 275 GTB Competition.

Ulster Historic Rally, BHRC Round Six Report
2010 British Historic Rally Championship Ulster Historic Rally

Category two victory for David Stokes and Guy Weaver and a stunning category three win for Connor Corkill and Rob Fagg headlined the action as the Dunlop/WONAGO.com MSA British Historic Rally Championship headed to Northern Ireland for the Ulster Rally (20/21 August).
In category one, a fine victory went to the Mini Cooper S of Ray Cunningham and Ross Forde, but the BHRC points contest was between Jonathan Gale/James Whitaker (Sunbeam Tiger) and Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride (Porsche 911).
The BHRC's first visit to Ulster was a runaway success and all the crews gave the event rave reviews. "We've been to a world class rally," said Jeremy Easson.

Category 1
Although not registered for the BHRC, Cunningham was keen to pit the Mini against the British crews and the Galway driver was in stunning form as he swept clear on the opening day to lay the foundations for an emphatic victory.
But the battle for top BHRC crew was far less clear-cut and it took a mighty effort from the XS Racing crew to keep Gale's Tiger running after a range of dramas. Two offs, including one into a fence, steering damage after a heavy landing and a detached roll bar all hit the Sunbeam in the course of 12 stages, but they ploughed on and ended the event as leading BHRC crew.
But Nutt was always there on his home event and maintained a constant pressure on Gale. Even at the finish the margin was just 15s after nearly two hours of competition. "There is still some play in the steering," said Nutt on Friday evening, but Gale had bigger concerns after hitting both ends of the Tiger on a bank in the Torr Head stage.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster sold by Bonhams in Gstaad
1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

A packed ballroom at the Palace Hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland on Friday 20 August witnessed a 100% success rate with over half the cars sold above their top estimate by Bonhams. The sale realised a premium inclusive CHF 2.15m (pre-sale estimate CHF 1.5m – 1.95m).

Top price of the day was the last lot offered, the 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster at CHF 580,130 (estimate CHF 400,000 – 600,000). Other strong performers were CHF 44,225 for a 1989 Audi Quattro Turbo 20V (estimate CHF 15,000 – 20,000); CHF 29,886 for a 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500E (estimate CHF 5,000 – 8,000); CHF 211,985 for a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 with non-matching engine (estimate CHF 100,000 – 140,000) and CHF 227,416 for a high mileage 1988 Porsche 959 (estimate CHF 100,000 -140,000).

As the sale was Swiss-based, the local market had a distinct advantage over EU buyers who had to factor in EU import costs, resulting in most bidders and buyers being from Switzerland. However, buyers from North America, UK, Belgium and France proved the collection really did appeal to a world-wide audience.

Barons’ annual British Heritage sale at Sandown Park on September 7th will be headlined by a ‘lost’ 1958 Aston Martin DB 2/4 MK111 drophead coupé that was originally owned by David Brown – the then owner of Aston Martin, after whom the iconic ‘DB’ models were named.

Just 84 drophead coupés were built, and this particular example was first registered to David Brown before passing into his wife’s ownership. It was subsequently sold to a Yorkshire mill owner and was regularly serviced by Aston Martin, before being acquired by a London-based architect who sold it to the vendor in 1974. For the past 30 years it has remained unused and stored on a trailer, and has emerged from beneath its tarpaulin to present a fascinating rolling restoration project (estimate: £80,000-£100,000).

“It is amazingly sound, and complete with its 2922cc engine, original buff logbook and workshop manuals and a comprehensive history file. ‘Lost’ cars of such importance come along very rarely and, with the direct association with such a pivotal figure in Aston Martin’s history, it should be a hugely rewarding project,” said Barons’ MD Laurence Sayers-Gillan.

Rare 1948 Streamliner Woodie Station Wagon for Sale
1948 Streamliner Woodie station wagon

Bonhams is delighted to present an extremely rare 1948 Streamliner “Woodie” station wagon, estimated at 55,000 – 75,000, at the sale of Fine Motor Cars and Automobilia at the 'Weekend de l'Excellence Automobile' held on the former site of the French Grand Prix circuit of Reims-Gueux on Saturday 11th September 2010.

The 'Woodie' station wagon, with its characteristically half-timbered body, ranks alongside the pickup truck as a quintessentially American vehicle. The style originated in the 1930s, its popularity peaking in the immediately post-war decades, though the look has been periodically revived by manufacturers on both sides of the Atlantic ever since.

Towards the end of the 1950s the Woodie became the vehicle of choice among California surfers, who appreciated its ability to carry several passengers and their boards. Surfer pop bands The Beach Boys and Jan Dean both referred to them in hit singles, thereby enshrining the Woodie's cult status. It has also featured in countless movies.

Pontiacs of this period are often referred to by the 'Silver Streak' name, a reference to their multiple chromed hood strips - a styling device first introduced in the mid-1930s. Boasting a wheelbase of 122" (3,099mm), the Pontiac Streamliner Woodie was the largest on the market and could seat up to nine; alternatively, removing the rear seats created even more space.
