ALMS- CORVETTE RACING TO MOVE TO GT2

SEPTEMBER 9, 2008/ Corvette Racing announced Tuesday that it will enter GT2 starting in the second half of the 2009 American Le Mans Series.

PART OF THE ALMS CORVETTE RACING TEAM ARRIVING AT MOSPORT "We do not want to run in a class by ourselves again, and I doubt I could sell it to management again." Those were the words Steve Wesoloski, GM's Road Racing Group Manager about the challenges they'd face in gaining support to spend a third season without any serious competition in the American Le Mans Series GT1 class. After reaching out to rival and potential GT1 manufacturers on joining the rather thin ALMS race class. With no takers GM decided to take a new direction.

GM wasn't willing to spend the tens of millions of dollars required to build a prototype to fight the likes of Audi, Peugeot, and Acura. A step down one class to GT2 was the only logical choice for Wesoloski and his partners at Pratt & Miller Racing.

With Corvette Racing moving their efforts to wrestle Porsche and Ferrari from the top of the GT2 category, fans are in store for a great season next year, but the this change in the American GT landscape will take time for us to adjust to.

Let's hope this isn't the end for Gt2 in North America.

CORVETTE TO MOVE INTO EVO?

CORVETTE LMP1-EVO For some time now there have been rumors that GM is working on LMP1-EVO entry into Le Mans. With the car count in the ALMS LMGT1 class dropping, manufacturers would have more meaningfull competition in the new LMP1-EVO class anounced by the ACO. All indications are that the Corvette EVO could be ready for the 2009 racing season. Word has it that GM will run the existing C6 Corvettes in LMGT1 no matter what, even with out competition in the ALMS for 1 more year.
It would be great to see GM enter their Corvettes in two categories. Let's keep our fingers crossed. This kind of news shows that the LMS and ALMS are the premier sports car series, and are poised to grow even bigger and better.

THE 2008 DETROIT SPORTS CAR CHALLENGE
PRESENTED BY BOSCH
DETROIT BELLE ISLE
DETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA, AUGUST 30, 2008

The ALMS will be joined by the Speed GT and IndyCar series this weekend in Detroit.

AGR WIN ON BELLE ISLE

James Rossiter and Franck Montagny won the Detroit Sports Car Challenge.
"The team did a very good job in terms of strategy, which was especially good after Mosport where we struggled," Montagny said. "This time we were a little bit lucky. James did his stint with tires from qualifying and the car looked OK although there was a bit of understeer. The tires looked fine as well. We did put a lot of time on the tires, and I don't think they could have could have lasted another 10 laps or half-stint. It was very close all the time."

The LMP1 victory went to Intersport Racing after the #2 Audi crashed and the #1 race winning Audi R10 of Emanuele Pirro and Marcel Fassler was excluded after it failed to meet the required minimum weight in post-race technical inspection.

After the race the #1 Audi R10 TDI was found to be 2.5 kilograms below the required minimum weight. Following a collision during the warm-up a spare bonnet was used in the race, which had been prepared for both vehicles but was therefore not adapted precisely to car #1.

Rolfsracing.com just spent an action packed week at Mosport International Raceway.

The AMLS testing on Monday and Tuesday only gave us a taste of things to come for Sunday's race.

As expected both Audi R10's qualifyed for the top 2 spots, and breaking the speed records at Mosport. Dindo Capello reached a qualifying lap record of 1:04.094 in the No 1 Audi, while Marco Werner wasn't far behind with a lap speed of 1:04.188. The next starting row in the grid was filled by the P2 cars Penske No 7 Porsche RS Spyder (Romain Dumas 1:04.318), and the No 9 Highcroft Racing Acura ARX-01b (David Brabham 1:04.603).

In the GT1, it came to no surprise that the Corvettes (#3 Johnny O'Connell 1:13.878 , #4 Olivier Beretta 1:13.947) overpowered their opponent # 008 Aston Martin DBR9 (Terry Borcheller 1:15.611).

The GT2 cars were closely matched in qualifying with the #62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 430 GT (Jaime Melo 1:16.863), the #87 Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (Dirk Werner 1:17.053), the #71 Tafel Racing Ferrari 430 GT (Dominik Farnbacher 1:17.232), and the #45 Flying Lizard Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 RSR (Wolf Henzler 1:17.566).

On race day, under cloudy skies, the race changed quickly with several of the P2 cars moving into the top spots around the Audi's. Penske Racing, Fernandez Racing, Andretti Green Racing and Highcroft Racing were crowding out Audi P1 cars.

By the 2nd hour of racing # Acura's were in the top 3 spots. The # 26 Andretti Green Racing, the #66 de Ferran Motorsports and the #15 Fernandez Racing entries were ahead of the Audi R10's. For the last half hour of the race the #66 de Ferran Motorsports held the top spot.

In the last lap of the race it all changed. Due to fuel strategies and a lack of cautions on the track the de Ferran entry ran out of fuel near the finish line (they ended up in 7th at the end). Both Audi's ended up in top spot as some of the other P2's ran out of fuel.

Here is the Audi post race report:

Audi have prematurely clinched the LM P1 Manufacturers' Championship in the American Le Mans Series with their third consecutive 1-2 victory. Before the last three races, the brand with the four rings is out of reach in the classifications for engine and chassis manufacturers.

Team Audi Sport North America's two Audi R10 TDI prototypes were running with different strategies in the closing stages of the Grand Prix of Mosport (Canada). Dindo Capello and Emanuele Pirro used one of the two caution perdiods for an early and final refuelling stop. If another "yellow" had occurred, the strategy might have worked out for the two Italians, but it stayed "green" until the end forcing Pirro to reduce the engine power and save fuel in the final hour. While other cars, opting for a similar strategy, ran out of fuel before the end, the Audi driver was able to take advantage of the low fuel consumption of the TDI engine and crossed the finish line in second position with the last drop of Shell V-Power Diesel.

Lucas Luhr and Marco Werner applied a different strategy in the exciting race. They stayed on track during the second caution period and came to the pits later for their third schedulled refuelling stop. This dropped them to eighth position, but Lucas Luhr was able to make up half a minute in the closing stages with enough fuel and fresh tyres, gradually moving up the race order. Nine laps from the finish he overtook the leading Acura/Honda.

Marco Werner had passed his pole sitting team-mate Dindo Capello on lap seven when the Italian got stuck behind a slower car. He held a 24-second lead when the Safety Car entered the track for the first time. After the driver-change, Lucas Luhr was also able to open a gap before his lead was negated by another caution period.

The only incident for the winning Audi crew occured during the first pit-stop when Marco Werner touched the pit-wall while exciting the pits and damaging the front section of his R10 TDI. The German was nevertheless able to set a new lap-record in 1m 05.823s.

Luhr and Werner celebrated their fifth overall victory in the 2008 American Le Mans Series and their seventh consecutive class win. This means the two Germans have the LM P1 Drivers' title almost in their hands. The next race takes place next Saturday (August 30) in Detroit (U.S. state of Michigan).

Quotes after the race at Mosport

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): "It was a fantastic race with a difficult strategic decision in the final phase. All the more beautiful it is that we have now clinched a double victory in the American Le Mans Series for the third time in succession proving ‘Vorsprung durch Technik' - and this being achieved against very strong competition. Congratulations to the whole team, also on prematurely clinching the Manufacturers' Championships."

Lucas Luhr (Audi R10 TDI #2): "That was a real challenge for me when I had to overtake almost all prototypes again at the end of the race. It worked out well. Our car was not in a perfect shape after our little mishap in the pits, and I really had to fight. Our engineer told me on the radio that I had to push like hell. I did, and fortunately it worked out."

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): "I've not seen such a great race for quite a while. It was really exciting. It was nail-biting because we were not sure if we could bring the victory home. There were two different strategies for our two cars. It's great that this gave us a 1-2 victory. It was really close in the end for Emanuele (Pirro) who opted for the ‘save fuel' method. We went flat-out but had to pit under ‘green'. I dedicate this victory to our boys who worked a lot this week and put a great car on the wheels for us."

Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #1): "It was a difficult race because we gambled a little bit with the fuel. From one side it was good because we really used the last drop of Diesel that was in our tank. This allowed us to finish second on the very last lap. On the other side we lost the chance to fight for the victory as soon we had to back off and save fuel. This was a little bit frustrating, but it is a great result for Audi and we enjoy it."

Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #1): "I really learned to save fuel during the stint. I was two steps of power down, but this was not enough and I had to roll the car into the corners. Despite that my lap times were good enough to keep the LMP 2 cars behind. I'm not happy about the race result because we had a fast car but we gambled and didn't make it. I'm happy on how we managed the situation and I'm happy about the way I drove. I literally ran out of fuel at start and finish. It was good to finish second in these conditions."

AUDI TAKES TOP TWO SPOTS AT ROAD AMERICA

Here are the Drivers Comments:

Lucas Luhr (Audi R10 TDI #2): "The strategy that we had in our minds before the race did not work out because of the many yellows. Nevertheless I was able to pull away quite well. Unfortunately we always lost the advantage we had due to the caution periods. Thank God in the end it was still enough to win. I'm more than happy. Marcel (Faessler) must also be praised. It was his first race with this car and he was able to catch the two Acura/Hondas and thus make the Audi 1-2 victory perfect. This was again a great race weekend. Thanks to the team of Audi Sport North America, to the boys at home and Michelin."

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): "A beautiful 50th race! The race was not easy, especially after the penultimate restart with the two Acura/Hondas in front of me. Behind these cars we lost a lot of down force, so it was incredibly difficult to close the gap to them. Once I even went off the track. At the end it worked well. Thanks to Audi TDI Power we got the Acura/Hondas on the straights. It was a nice race, I spent a lot of time in the car, it was a lot of fun."

Marcel Faessler (Audi R10 TDI #1): "This was a very special race for me. The final restart was unbelievable. It was pretty close between Brabham and the wall. But I said to myself: Now or never! It worked out. I am very happy that I was able to give the second place to the team. It ran very well from the beginning, I am satisfied. Generally speaking, the atmosphere at Audi and in the American Le Mans Series is perfect."

Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #1): "I'm really happy. It was a very good and interesting race with many yellows. Some helped us, some did not help us. I think we did a good job. Marcel (Faessler) drove very well and integrated really well into the team. There is nothing to complain about and we can go home with a smile on our faces."

THE AUDIS ARE BACK
Audi Sport North America takes overall 1st and 2nd at Mid-Ohio

A few words from the winners:

Lucas Luhr (Audi R10 TDI #2): "It was a perfect day for Audi! It looks like then, if the boss is there, everything goes well. He should come over to some more races Audi R10 TDI at Mid-Ohio ... Seriously: I'm super-happy. Our car engineer and the whole team did a great job. The strategy was perfect. First, I had a bit of doubt. But when I did not see any car behind me two laps after the first caution period I knew that nobody would catch us today. Marco (Werner) drove a fantastic first stint. My thanks go to Audi Sport North America, Team Champion and everybody at home in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm."

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): "A fantastic Audi day and a fine double victory! I started to believe in it after yesterday's qualifying, when the gap to the front was quite small, which usually means we are well sorted for the race. This was really the case today. Lucas (Luhr) completed his stint on one set of tyres which is not easy. This means that the set-up of our R10 TDI was perfect. The timing of the pit stops was also good. Today, everything fitted together. We are happy - thanks to the whole Audi team."

Our thoughts are with De Ferran Motorsports fueler Keith Jones and his family.

He was injured in a pit fire during the American Le Mans Series race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Simon Pagenaud was at the wheel when the team's Acura ARX-01B pulled away after a stop with the fuel hose still attached to the car. Safety workers quickly put out the fire, but not before Jones, wearing a helmet and fire-retardant clothing, was briefly caught up in the flames. He is now at the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Wishard in the Wishard Health Services in Indianapolis.

De Ferran's No. 66 was parked after the fire and was scored 26th in the 30-car field.

The team has asked that all wishes and cards for Keith Jones be sent to the de Ferran Motorsports headquarters in Brownsburg, Ind. The team headquarters are listed below:
Keith Jones
c/o De Ferran Motorsports
485 Southpoint Circle, Suite 900
Brownsburg, IN 46112

UTAH GRAND PRIX PRESENTED BY GRAND &
LITTLE HOTELS, MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK
TOOELE, UTAH (May 18, 2008)

In an upset six P2 class cars were ahead of the first place P1 Audi Sport North America Audi R10 of Lucas Luhr and Marco Werner.

The fields are starting to be under represented by P1 and GT1 cars. It's about time to change incentives or rules to give these two classes a better edge. Our suggestion is to make P1 and GT1 factory efforts, and the P2 and GT2 classes privateers. That should level the playing field more than added weight, fuel tank sizes and restrictors. Possibly this would bring more factory entrants back to the series.
